Add to basket1871. (hardcover) Very good, no dust jacket. Believed to have been published in sections. These two lacking St. Matthew and therefore accompanying title pages. Blue marbled boards with quarter cloth fraying, splitting, mostly lacking on one. Very fragile and the odd page is loose. Scarce in any condition. Believe to be 1871 prin…ting. From the Birdwell Library Special Collections "Separate portions of the Bible in Micmac, an Algonquin language with speakers primarily located in Canada's Atlantic Provinces and the Gaspé Peninsula of Quebec, were first printed in the second half of the nineteenth century. Translated by Silas Tertius Rand (18101889) of the Micmac Mission, nearly all of these early editions, including this 1875 volume of selections from the New Testament, were published in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Three separate writing systems were utilized in publishing the Micmac language: the Pitman phonetic script used in this volume, roman characters, and ideographic characters developed by Father Charles Kauder (active mid-nineteenth century) for a catechism published in 1866 at Vienna.".
