    Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Both an artist and physician, Richard Upton Piper was born in Stratham New Hampshire 1816. Educated at Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. Piper authored & illustrated "Operative Surgery" (Boston 1852) and Maclise's Surgical Anatomy. Trees of America was originally published in soft cover installments. This 10 X 12.25 inch volume has all 64 published pages with original wraps and 14 engraved plates. Bound in impressive period leather boards with marbled inlaid and columned spine with gold gilt titles. World Cat shows William White as publisher but may have been the printer as other installments show A. Williams in same capacity. Well preserved inner hinges and marbled end papers, gold gilt to top page deck and rough cut pages edges to outside and bottom deck. Quarter sized oval period ink stamp of the Mass. Horticultural Society April 6 1885 on 1st installment page cover.
