Add to basketHardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. R R McIan (illustrator). 1st Thus. In this instance the name of the artist, R R McIan, takes precedence over the text compiler, James Logan. This pair combined their talents to produce a classic work on the costumes, tartan and history of the numerous Scottish clans in two volumes, printed in 1845 and 1847. Within a short time these became rare collectors' items. In 1983 Chancellor republished the two as one volume with a few additions. These included a map on front pastedowna and RFEP showing the home territory of the clans, the clan listings were re-arranged alphabetically and Lady Antonia Fraser provided a new forward. Otherwise the book is "a complete and faithful reproduction of the original" including the original subscribers list. In all 72 clans are represented by McIan's full page colour paintings. Each is accompanied by a short clan history, with a footnote describing its amorial bearing (coat-of-arms) which is also illustrated in colour. Two other full colour plate pages present clan shields against a decorative background. On the FFEP and rear pastdown is a list of the clans and their connected family names. This is a beautifully produced and presented book of 206 pages. Red hard covers with clan figures both boatds and white spine titles are VG+ with narrow fade bands upper/lower edges front board, pencil gift inscription FFEP text block otherwise NF. Plastic protected colour art DJ is VG with light but even fading to front, jacket upper and lower edges tape bound. This is a heavy book at 1.7kgs unpacked --- contact vendor for accurate overseas postal costs.
