Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Grave robbing is a suspected source of supply for the bodies used as specimens in the anatomy classes at the Medical College of Georgia in 1854. Two students, John and Sterling, take a break from their studies one night and have a drink at the tavern. While there, they spy Grandison Harris, the slave purchased to work as a porter for the school. They decide to see what he has in the back of his wagon. A shovel and a body in a bag on the floor of his wagon convince them that Harris is a resurrectionist. The students resolve to play a trick on the porter. Removing the body from its bag and hiding it, John crawls into the sack, intending to scare Harris. But, as the porter climbs in the wagon, the prank goes awry when the horse bolts and runs away. John remains trapped in the bag and when he tries to wriggle free, Harris sees the movement and mistakes the body for an evil spirit. The porter hits the squirming sack with a shovel, takes it back to the cemetery and puts it in the grave. John is either dead or buried alive. Surrounding the mystery are stories exemplifying the best heroic medical treatment of the day including; bleeding, purging and application of plasters for the treatment of Yellow Fever and other maladies along with development of ether anesthesia, surgical procedures, use of laudanum and the practice of autopsy to further medical knowledge. Reid, Haley And Daryl (illustrator). …

Paperback. Condition: Good. Marvelously funny, bittersweet, and beautifully evocative, the original publication of A Short History of a Small Place announced the arrival of one of our great Southern voices. Although T. R. Pearson's Neely, North Carolina, doesn't appear on any map of the state, it has already earned a secure place on the literary landscape of the South. In this introduction to Neely, the young narrator, Louis Benfield, recounts the tragic last days of Miss Myra Angelique Pettigrew, a local spinster and former town belle who, after years of total seclusion, returns flamboyantly to public view-with her pet monkey, Mr. Britches. Here is a teeming human comedy inhabited by some of the most eccentric and endearing characters ever encountered in literature.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Welcome to the daring, thrilling, and downright strange adventures of William Willis, one of the world's original extreme sportsmen. Driven by an unfettered appetite for personal challenge and a yen for the path of most resistance, Willis mounted a single-handed and wholly unlikely rescue in the jungles of French Guiana and then twice crossed the broad Pacific on rafts of his own design, with only housecats and a parrot for companionship. His first voyage, atop a ten-ton balsa monstrosity, was undertaken in 1954 when Willis was sixty. His second raft, having crossed eleven thousand miles from Peru, found the north shore of Australia shortly after Willis's seventieth birthday. A marvel of vigor and fitness, William Willis was a connoisseur of ordeal, all but orchestrating short rations, ship-wreck conditions, and crushing solitude on his trans-Pacific voyages. He'd been inspired by Kon-Tiki, Thor Heyerdahl's bid to prove that a primitive raft could negotiate the open ocean. Willis's trips confirmed that a primitive man could as well. Willis survived on rye flour and seawater, sang to keep his spirits up, communicated with his wife via telepathy, suffered from bouts of temporary blindness, and eased the intermittent pain of a double hernia by looping a halyard around his ankles and dangling upside-down from his mast. Rich with vivid detail and wry humor, Seaworthy is the story of a sailor you've probably never heard of but need to know. In an age when countless rafts were adrift on the waters of the world, their crews out to shore up one theory of ethno-migration or tear down another, Willis's challenges remained refreshingly personal. His methods were eccentric, his accomplishments little short of remarkable. Don't miss the chance to meet this singular monk of the sea. From the Hardcover edition.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The New York Times and USA Today Bestseller! Reinvent your marketing to keep up with an ever-changing marketplace "A must-read for any business leader or marketer. It explains how brands must be true to their essence and be reinvented to remain relevant in this radically changed, information-rich, and Internet-oriented world." --Robert Hanson, President, Global Levi''s® Brand, Levis Strauss & Co. "Pearson makes the clearest statement yet about the new world of marketing, as he makes the difficult and complex concepts of brands and reinvention understandable to everyone." --Bob Jeffrey, CEO, JWT "When it comes to global brands, Pearson has no peers. His understanding of how companies and enterprises that breakaway from their competitors and reinvent their businesses will inherit the next era of global commerce is revolutionary." --Michel Recalt, Director of Marketing and Brand Strategy, LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton "The Old Rules of Marketing are Dead presents a new reality: marketing must be reinvented if it is to remain relevant by placing a premium on business acumen, strategy and communications." --MaryLee Sachs, Chairman U.S., Hill & Knowlton "Pearson has distilled 27 years of business experience into a book that shows the old ways of marketing have been replaced by new more up-to-date approaches and concepts to reinvent businesses and brands--and drive profitable sales." --Stephen G. Butler, retired Chairman / CEO, KPMG International / KPMG LLP "Tim Pearson''s name is synonymous with strategy, value-proposition development, and marketing. From now on, it will be synonymous with reinvention and the new ''do or die'' rules of business." --Mark A. Emkes, retired Chairman, CEO and President, Bridgestone Americas "Every leader and company director must learn the fundamental rules and principles of reinvention that will bring marketing into the 21st century. Reinvention must be the byword for this post-Great Recession era and the changes it requires that will make companies and businesses of all sizes great." --R. David Hoover, Chairman, President and CEO, Ball Corporation About the Book: Revolutionary new technologies developed over the past decade have completely changed the way humans communicate and transact business. Not exactly late-breaking news for most people of the world . . . except for those who are supposed to be marketing to them. While consumers, customers, and marketplaces have adapted to these new realities, most marketers have not. Renowned marketing expert Tim Pearson explains why you need to sever your ties to the comfortable old ways of marketing--and bring your company''s marketing into the twenty-first century. Too many marketers still operate as if strategy necessarily depends upon predetermined budgets; advertising is the catch-all to every problem; and marketing results can''t be measured. It all adds up to the age-old belief that marketing is an art, not a science--which couldn''t be further from the truth. The Old Rules of Marketing Are Dead is a road map for breaking out of old, established--and increasingly ineffective--routines and reinventing your organization''s marketing by: Positioning marketing as a business partner--not as a tool for meeting a strategic objective Holding marketing accountable for results with the application of hard data-- not vague qualitative measurements Providing leadership within your organization--not following the direction of everyone else From research frameworks and concept development to planning, budgeting, media placement, and program implementation, marketers have not kept up--to the detriment of themselves and their companies. Completely revamping old-school marketing is the only way to drive profitable sales, create growing brands, and increase market share in today''s post-Great Recession business landscape. Pearson calls for nothing short of a marketing revolution. You must throw out almost everything you hold dear and embrace technology, a new role in business, and real accountability. The Old Rules of Marketing Are Dead has what you need to reinvent your products, your services--and your future.…
