Both in the same style. ONE: 'Cheap Meat.' Dimensions: paper 25 x 29.5 cm; plate 22.5 x 27.5 cm; image 18.5 x 23.5 cm. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight discoloration to corners from previous mounting. Beneath plate: 'W. H. Pyne delt. Smart & Hunt sculpt.' A curious eighteenth-century scene, the significance of which is now lost, showing an angry old man in greatcoat and hat, a laughing crowd in the street behind him, bursting in to a bookshop and knocking over a stool and inkpot, to the surprise and outrage of an old woman with a stick, a younger woman and dog, while the owner, quill pen behind ear, leans over from behind the counter, and a young clerk in a pulpit looks down smiling. TWO: 'A Thief in the Kirk.' Dimensions: paper 23.5 x 29 cm; plate 22 x 27 cm; image 18 x 23.5 cm. In good condition, with slight damage to corners from previous mounting, and light damp staining to head of border. The fiendish looking thief, clutching his bonnet, and dressed in tartan jacket and kilt, vaults over a pew to make his escape, while the minister, his clerk, and a congregation of grotesques (including the obligatory beautiful young girl) look on. As with the other print, no information on this illustration has been discovered.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Three volumes, Large Folio (425 x 340mm). Large Paper Copy. 100 hand-coloured aquatint plates by T. Sutherland, R. Reeve, W.J. Bennett, D. Havell and J. Baily after C. Wild, J. Stephanoff, R. Cattermole, W. Westall and G. Samuel. (occasinal spotting, margin staining, marks). Rebound half green morocco, gilt titles. uncut copy. FIRST EDITION. A Good copy of the most ambitious aquatint book to be published on English interiors. This celebrated work was the first to illustrate royal palaces and houses in any detail. Volume I is a valuable record of the state rooms of Windsor Castle formed for Charles II, and concludes with the more domestic scenes of Frogmore, purchased by Queen Charlotte as a country retreat in 1793. Volume II is devoted to Hampton Court, whose state rooms had fallen into disuse for almost 60 years, Buckingham Palace, bought for the Queen for £28,000 shortly after her marriage to George III, and Kensington Palace, constructed for William III, but so neglected by 1814 that the Duke of Kent complained of 'rain pouring through the ceiling at twenty different points' and of being 'literally perishing with cold in my library'. St. James's Palace and Carlton House form the subject of volume III, and while the former had been badly burned in 1809, the 20 plates devoted to the Prince Regent's residence show what were regarded as the most spectacular interiors in Regency London. Abbey Scenery 396; Tooley 389. Scarce Large Paper Copy.

Folio. (14 x 10 inches). Hand-coloured stipple-engraved title vignette, 60 hand-coloured aquatint plates with partially coloured backgrounds. Contemporary full green straight grained morocco, covers bordered in gilt and blind, spine with wide semi-raised bands in six compartments, tooled in gilt on each band, lettered in the second compartment, the other with a repeat decoration in blind, blue endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a cloth box. Lovely copy of the deluxe issue with coloured backgrounds. This lavishly illustrated book offers a vibrant depiction of British social and occupational life at the turn of the 19th century. Published in 1804, The Costume of Great Britain captures the diversity of British society through a series of hand-coloured aquatint plates accompanied by descriptive text. Each plate portrays figures in traditional and occupational dress, ranging from milkmaids and fishmongers to nobility and clergy, reflecting both urban and rural life. The work was issued in three forms: with only the figures coloured, with the foreground immediately behind or around the figures coloured (as the present) and a rare issue with sky additionally coloured. Pine was a bookseller and publisher based in Bristol. His collaboration with skilled artists and engravers, such as William Alexander and John Harris, ensured the high quality and detail of this work. The combination of artistry and ethnographic attention makes the present work a cornerstone of costume literature, reflecting the broader European fascination with national and regional identities in dress during the 18th and early 19th century. Abbey, Life 430; Colas 2447; Tooley 388; martin-Hardie 142.

Oblong folio (14 x 10 inches). Engraved vignette title-page, 60 aquatint plates followed by a leaf of descriptive letterpress text. Contemporary scarlet morocco elaborately decorated in gilt and blind. Provenance: with the late 19th-century bookplate of Ricardi Gascoigni (ie Richard Gascoigne) by "CH" after George Quested. Third and most desirable state with fully coloured backgrounds (Tooley). William Henry Pyne is generally known as an etcher, landscape painter and author. In the present volume, Pyne combines all three of his talents to produce a charming account which invites the reader to experience the many aspects of early nineteenth century Britain. Pyne exhibits costumes ranging from royalty, clergy and military dress to those of milk maids and coal shovellers. Pictured against the beautifully drawn and colored backgrounds, the figures come to life in their contemporary settings and the reader can identify with the luxury of the Lord Mayor and the Bishop, as well as the hardships endured by the working class. A contemporary of such great character artists as Thomas Rowlandson and George Cruikshank, W.H. Pyne, in the wardrobes and dress represented here, allows us to envision the manners, habits and lifestyle of British citizens during the early 1800's. A spectacular set. (Tooley 388; Abbey Life 430; Martin-Hardie 142,151).

There are several exterior views but the majority of the plates show the elegant decoration and furnishing of the interiors.
