Inspector Purbright is on loan to the police in Chalmsbury to investigate a series of bombings. He quickly learns that Chalmsbury may be the Sodom to Flaxborough's Gomorrah. Detective Inspector Purbright finds himse…lf on loan to the police in Chalmsbury, a town that neighbors Flaxborough and is very like it in the general licentiousness of its citizenry. It seems that one ofthem has been blowing up the town's monuments and all the efforts ofthe Chalmsbury police force to find the miscreant have been in vain. Also, explosives have gone missing from the Flaxborough civil defense center where, by an odd coincidence, Chief Inspector Hector Larch ofthe Chalmsbury police force spends his Tuesday nights. Determined not to get in Larch's way, Purbright takes his time getting to know the locals, but when one of them is killed in the latest explosion, he steps up his investigations. With almost no clues to go on save a few scraps of cobbled together verse, he sorts through the town's eccentric residents until he finally gets his man. First published in 1960, this is the second of Colin Watson's witty Flaxborough chronicles. Pudim, Rob (illustrator). Trade Paperback.

Pictorial Wrappers. Condition: As New. No Jacket. 1st Prtg. 1st printing. A fine, unread copy of the trade paperback. Flaxborough is a "high-spirited town . .like Gomorrah." It's Inspector Purbright's job to keep its citizens on the straight-and-narrow in this comic romp. He hasn't got a chance. There were surprisingly few mourn…ers at Harold Carobleat's funeral, just his widow and a handful of prominent Flaxborough citizens, including newspaper publisher Marcus Gwill. When Gwill' s naked body is found electrocuted some months later, its mouth stuffed with marshmallows, Inspector Purbright and his cherubic assistant, Sergeant Love, begin to suspect the two deaths are connected. But what are they to make of a series of peculiar coded advertisements that has been appearing in the Flaxborough newspaper? And why is the doctor's surgery so busy after hours? Remember, this is Flaxborough, a "high-spirited town . .like "Gomorrah," where anything can happen, and usually does. First published in 1958, this is the first of eleven satirical mysteries featuring Purbright, Love, and other denizens ofthis anything but peaceful East Anglian town. Pudim, Rob (illustrator). They were pleased, if somewhat puzzled, when two gentlemen with decidedly old-world manners choose to befriend them when their car… mysteriously broke down in a small French village while they were on holiday one fine day in 1958. What they didn't know was that the two men were ancestors of theirs. The two had died some 80 years earlier when, emboldened by strong drink and with only a pet monkey and an aged waiter as allies, the two made a valiant, foolish and quite fatal attempt to halt a German advance during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Now, these two ectoplasmic gentlemen and their spectral pet monkey were summoned from their final resting place in an unmarked grave because their visiting relatives were in serious trouble. Pictorial Wrappers. Condition: As New. 1st Prtg. 1st prtg. A fine, unread copy of the trade paperback (originally published in 1938). Twenty-five years ago John Farnleigh, the heir to the baronetcy of Mallingford and Sloane, then a young and wild boy exiled to America, survived the sinking of the Titanic. It's now 1937, two year…s after he returned to England to claim his inheritance. Only is he really the heir? Another man has just shown up also claiming to be John Farnleigh, explaining that, as boys, the two men switched identities as the ship was sinking. The key to solving the mystery lies with an old set of fingerprints taken by young Farnleigh's tutor. But before the two men's fingerprints can be compared one member of the household has his throat cut in plain sight by an unseen hand. Everyone is pretty certain the crime isn't the work of a ghost. Odder yet, the victim is the last person one would expect to be murdered. Fortunately, Dr. Gideon Fell, an amateur sleuth with a knack for solving impossible crimes, happens to be staying at the local pub. First published in 1938, The Crooked Hinge is considered one of the best books by the acknowledged master of the locked room and impossible crime. Pudim, Rob (illustrator). Trade Paperback.

Pictorial Wrappers. Condition: As New. No Jacket. 1st Prtg. 1st printing. A fine, unread copy of this Trade Paperback. An eccentric Brit's attempt to summon ancient Greek gods ends in murder most foul. Sir Rudri Hopkinson, a slightly cracked rich Englishmen with a penchant for history, is determined to reenact the ancient ritual…s at the temple of Eleusis in hopes of summoning the goddess Demeter. Among the thirteen people he's gathered for the experiment is a rival scholar, a handsome photographer, his adult children, and a trio of mischievous boys, whose nefarious activities are financed by criminal psychologist Beatrice Bradley. When one of their number goes missing and a severed head turns up in a box of snakes, it's time for Mrs.Bradley to set aside her babysitting chores and turn sleuth. First published in 1937, Come Away, Death is Mitchell at her best and shows why contemporary critics lumped her with Sayers and Christie as one ofthe "big three" of English women mystery writers. In addition to a tight plot, a fascinating locale, a short but informative history of minor Greek gods, and some well-drawn characters, Mitchell displays a delicious, almost Noel Cowardish wit. Pictorial Wrappers. Condition: New. First Printing. 1st printing. Paperback. An unread, new copy. Since his retirement from King's University, life has been rather quiet for Professor Daly . . . .In fact, a peaceful retirement, even when that retirement has been punctuated by helping the police to solve the odd crime, may be sli…ghtly over-rated: at least in Daly's opinion. So when he is invited back to King's University to deliver a series of prestigious lectures, his heart leaps. But on arrival he discovers that he has not been called back to the university on account of his literary knowledge. On the contrary, he has been called upon purely because the retired professor has experience of solving crime. And somebody has been sending the president of King's threatening letters. Somebody within the university, it seems, wants him dead. Perhaps aware of his own arrogant, materialistic, and bullying nature and the effects it may produce, President Bradley seems genuinely worried for his safety. And so Daly, assisted by Inspector Mike Kenny, sets about finding the author of the poison pen letters. Until Bradley dies. Poisoned. At which point, Daly and Kenny find themselves seeking a murderer among the university's population. First published in 1956, this third and final mystery by the author is a witty and perceptive look at professors behaving badly, a subject as a faculty wife herself she had ample experience of. Pudim, Rob (illustrator). Book.

Pictorial Wrappers. Condition: New. First Printing. 1st printing. Paperback. As new, unread copy. Death is inevitable, or is it.George Arrow, a good-looking, independently wealthy and single man of 36, has just been diagnosed with a weak heart. A heart so weak, his doctor tells him, he must go to extraordinary lengths to avoid p…utting the slightest strain upon it. On his doctor's advice, George packs up his life in Dublin and boards a train to the Bay of Galway where he intends to live quietly in a hotel and await the inevitable end. On the train, he meets John Burden, and as they chat, George realizes that his new acquaintance is an odious man. So, it is with some alarm that he realizes the very unpleasant John Burden is, just like George himself, about to start a new chapter of his life at Crane's Court. As that new life progresses, George realizes that all of his first impressions of Burden-that he is a selfish, nasty man-are entirely correct. And George is not the only person who thinks so. So, when Burden is found dead, stabbed through the heart with a kitchen knife, it's not a matter of finding out why he was killed but of narrowing down the field of people who wanted him gone. Inspector Mike Kenny must identify the killer, but where to start? Told with gentle wit and charm, this first detective novel by a renowned Irish writer of children's and literary fiction was originally published in 1953 and was followed by two others before she gave up crime writing for good. Pudim, Rob (illustrator). Book.

Pictorial Wrappers. Condition: Fine. 1st Prtg. 1st prtg. Oversize trade paperback, fine in decorated wraps. First published in 1953, The Black Iris was the twentieth of twenty-one screwball mysteries by the incomparable Little sisters. The Little sisters were the reigning queens of the cozy screwball mystery from the 1930's to t…he 1950's. Combining the the charm and laughs of a Frank Capra movie with the eccentric characters of a George S. Kaufmann play. "The two elderly aunts liked a glass of sherry, a plate of cookies. .and a nice little game of Russian roulette. But someone else was playing an even deadlier game. Miss Ivy and Miss Violet quarreled about everything, especially about who would get their money when they were gone: their nephew Richard or the glamorous Broadway actress Ada Terry, related to them by marriage. It got to the point that the only way they could settle the dispute, or so they thought, was to play Russian roulette with one another. The wishes of whichever sister survived would prevail. Richard was upset when he learned about their little game and began substituting blanks for the live cartridges they used. He also thought he'd come up with the perfect scheme to end the quarrel by telling them he intended to marry Ada. But the last thing he expected was for Ada to set a date for the wedding and announce it to the whole town. His plan was turning into a total disaster when the two old ladies, still quarreling, disappeared. Searching for the missing sisters, Richard, Ada and the police uncover a game even more dangerous than the one Ivy and Violet enjoyed." -- publisher. Pudim, Rob (illustrator). Trade Paperback.

Pictorial Wrappers. Condition: Fine. 1st Prtg. 1st prtg. A fine, unread copy. A gypsy woman's vision puts a gentleman copper on the trail of a kidnapper in the streets, gardens and halls of Oxford. When two month-old Perdita Link goes missing from her pram in an Oxford don's garden, Inspector Richard Ringwood is asked to interru…pt his courting to track her down. It's a very perplexing case. There are almost as many suspects as leads, including a gypsy woman, a mysterious foreign intruder, an observing young thug, a conscientious nanny, and even an eccentric don or two. All Inspector Ringwood knows for sure is that his chances of finding young Perdita alive lessen with each passing hour. With the help of his fiancée, Claire Liddicote, and Sam Plummer, a resourceful, if plodding, Oxford policeman, Richard explores every corner of this ancient university town, from its academic halls to nearby gypsy encampments. An Oxford graduate himself, Richard is equally at home trading witticisms in Latin with the dons as he is in using his limited Romany (book-learned, he has no idea how the words are pronounced) to converse with an old gypsy woman. He's taken aback when she goes into a trance and tells him he is to deal with "a single loss, a double find." Written by the w ife of Austin Farrer, described by the Archbishop of Canterbury as "'possibIy the greatest Anglican mind ol the twentieth century," this very cleverly titled 1952 traditional English mystery offers up a marvelous portrait ot life in Oxford, where the Farrers were intimate friends to CS. Lewis, Charles Williams, .J.R.R. Tolkien, and Dorothy L. Sayers. While there's plenty ot attention paid to the coming and goings of the dons, much of it with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Farrer also depicts the daily doings of their families, as well as the townspeople. with an insider's quiet humor. The action comes to a head during a very avant garde performance of Shakespeare's 'The Winter's Tale,' leading to Richard's gripping fnial battle with a most fiercesome adversary. 192 pages. Pudim, Rob (illustrator). Trade Paperback.

When a man is found suffocated to death in an escape tunnel under impossible conditions, British POWS turn detective. Based in part on Gilbert's own experiences a…s a prisoner-of-war during World War II, The Danger Within (Death in Captivity in Britain) is often considered one of the author's best books. British prisoners in Campo 127 . are concerned when they learn that the Allies are about to invade Italy since this means that it's only a matter of time before the Germans seize control of their camp and so escape plans are escalated. "Black land, white land, always at strife." So goes the old saying in Durshire, where the people who once owned the black land were pushed off it ages…ago to the white land, the barren chalk hills above the fertile alluvial plains. And history seems to be repeating itself as rich newcom~rs still continue to usurp the black-land holdings of impoverished landowners. Reginald Fortune, who's summoned to Durshire by his eccentric friend General Duddon, is thrust into this age-old conflict when the general's discovery of ancient giant's bones turns out to include the rather recent bones of a boy who disappeared some ten years ago. Reggie stubbornly searches for the lad's murderer, undeterred by bitter family feuds and the uncooperative and incompetent Superintendent Bubb, who takes over the case when his chief constable meets with an unfortunate accident. Reggie very nearly meets with one himself when he's left for dead in a chalk pit, but with a little help from his friend Lomas at Scotland Yard, he lives to see justice done and young love triumph. A self-described country doctor with no imagination, Reggie solves his cases by sheer determination and highly developed powers of observation. First published in 1937, this is his second novel-length case. A. Pudim, Rob (illustrator). Book.

Two safecrackers lend British agent Tommy Hambledon a hand in sussing out Nazi spies and dealing with the rather odd residents of a mental hospital. After Jim Wamford is found guilty of s…elling secrets to the enemy and discharged from his regiment, he's very much at loose ends-that is, until he meets John Marden, a professional safe-cracker who is nonetheless a gentleman and a very pleasant one at that, despite the fact that he was trying to break into Wamford's own safe when they met. The two become fast friends and unite in a common purpose, to find the fellow officer who framed Wamford and to round up the German spies who stole his secrets. Mrs. Bradley is summoned when a faculty-student production of "The Mikado" at a progressive English school turns deadly in this 1934 classic. When Miss Ferris drowned in a wash basin duriqg a perfonnance of The Mikado at the Hill…maston Coeducational Day School, the police ruled it a suicide. The school's headmaster wasn't so sure. He called in that grand dame of detection, the psychoanalyst-sleuth Mrs. Beatrice Lestrange Bradley. The innocuous Miss Ferris wasn't popular among her fellow teachers, several of whom feared she would expose their guilty secrets. But these transgressions, for the most part, appeared too inconsequential to end in murder. "Death at the Opera" (Death in the Wet in the U.S.) is an early mystery by Gladys Mitchell, lumped with Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers by contemporary critics as one of England's "big three" women mystery writers. Mitchell wrote 66 mysteries featuring Mrs. Bradley between 1929 and her death in 1983. Death at the Opera was filmed for British television (with a different motive, killer and method of murder than in the book) in 2000 with Diana Rigg portraying Mrs. Bradley. Pudim, Rob (illustrator). This may well be the most ingenious one of them all. Emma Betony was content to live out her remaining years in a home for decayed gentlewomen when…she receives an urgent appeal for help from a former student. Grace Aram is running Makeways, a struggling boarding school for girls, newly relocated in a former nursing home in Dorset far from the falling German bombs. But Grace isn't interested in Miss Betony's teaching skills. She needs someone she can trust to expose the culprit behind a series of troubling events, induding the possible poisoning of one of the two remaining nursing paitents. What Miss Betony finds is an overwhehning sense of fear on the part of the Makeways' inhabitants. Miss Betony follows a series of clues that eventually lead her to The Great Arnbrosio, a charismatic, extremely handsome fortune teller with more than one trick up his sleeve. First published in 1941, Fear and Miss Betony marks the final appearance of lnspector Dan Pardoe. But it is Miss Betony herself who fights through fear and solves the case. Contemporary critics immediately proclaimed the book an instant classic, with two-time Edgar-winning critic James Sandoe including the book in his Readers' Guide to Crime (1944), one of the earliest-and most astute-lists of the best books in the genre. Pudim, Rob (illustrator). Trade Paperback.

Dick Rouston claimed Jane Cowrer murdered his fiancée, which made for a pretty awkward situation, since Jane was equally convinced th…at Dick had murdered her. No, this isn't a ghost story, although there is an old black piano that appears to play by itself every night and can only be heard by Jane. Of course, Jane isn't really Jane. She's wealthy Gloria Rouston--or at least she was until someone pushed her off a bridge one night while she was vacationing with Dick and several gold-digging friends and relatives. She managed to escape that attempt on her life with only a concussion and a few scratches. She figured the killer(or killers) would just finish her off if she returned home, so she used the wad of money in her purse to pay for a little plastic surgery and went back to her home town to do a little sleuthing, hoping that no one would see plain old Gloria in the new body and face sported by the now glamorous Jane. And she didn't really set out to marry John Cowrer, the nephew of the woman who helped nurse her back to health, but she had to admit that a new husband provided excellent cover, provided you didn't think too much about the bigamy laws. It's another outrageous plot from two of the most inventive mystery writers of the 1930s and 1940s, although the tone in this 1948 novel is a bit darker than usual. Pudim, Rob (illustrator). Bickering ex-lovers and a disappearing corpse highlight this 1952 comedy by the queens of screwball. There was no question that Agatha Bunson hated her cook. Em could cook. Just about everyone agreed on that point. Agatha, howev…er, despised Em's slovenly ways and was forever cleaning up after her. If she could, she would have fired Em ages ago. But an odd clause in her father's will prevented her from doing that. Now Em was dead and Agatha assumed she must have done it, although she had no recollection of killing her. But lately, Agatha had been prone to walking in her sleep and she figured it was during one of these nocturnal rambles that she did in the disgusting old creature. What's done is done, Agatha thought, and so she propped Em up in a rocking chair and squirreled her away in a sealed closet. There'd be time enough later to figure out what to do with the body. Of course Em was soon missed. Cleanliness might not have been her forte but her food tasted good and Agatha's cooking was a poor substitute. In fact, people were beginning to get a bit testy at meal times. And Christine and Allen, two doctors who had sleeping rooms as well as medical offices in the boarding house, were naturally testy-at least with each other, having once been engaged back before Christine went to medical school. Although Agatha had the most to gain from Em's death, Inspector Lewis had plenty of other suspects among Em's relatives and the other boarders. But everything got a lot more complicated when Em's corpse went missing and things started to go bump in the night in the basement. This 1952 charmer is vintage Little, writing in the second to the last year oftheir collaboration. Pudim, Rob (illustrator). Trade Paperback.
