Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Arnold and Lorraine Walter (illustrator). First edition. This uncommon limited first edition of an illustrated science fiction anthology compiled by William L. Crawford with the original unclipped dust wrapper. The first edition of the work, which according to the dust wrapper's flyleaf was originally published in a limited run of one thousand copies. Some stories included in this collection were first published in popular science fiction magazines such as Weird Tales andThrilling Wonder Stories. With several delightful monochrome plate illustrations by Arnold and Lorraine Walter accompanying the text.Uncommon.This is a peculiar and exciting collection of short science fiction compiled by William L. Crawford, pseudonymously known as 'Garret Ford'. Crawford was an important editor and publisher of science fiction, founding the Fantasy Publishing Company which was one of the central fan presses of the era and with which Science and Sorcery was published. This collection contains works by major science fiction authors such as 'The Naming of Names' by Ray Bradbury, 'The Little Man on the Subway' by Isaac Asimov and James MacCreigh, 'Scanners Live in Vain' by Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger, or Cordwainer Smith, and 'The Lost Cord' by Sam Moskowitz'. In the original publisher's full red cloth binding. Externally, very excellent with just a touch of bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Wrapper is generally smart with light age toning, minor handling marks, and edgewear, including some fractional closed tears and chips, with an archival tape repair to the top edge of its reverse. Internally, firmly bound with pages that are somewhat age toned, however clean. Near Fine. book.

An attractive edition of this work originally published in 1878. When the stories were first released most readers thought they were genuine accounts of crime-solving, something of a trend at the time and testament perhaps to the author's talents. Some browning, ink ownership inscription to front pastedown; boards little rubbed; jacket with a few minor closed tears, minor marking and rubbing, overall very good. Book.
