No Binding. Condition: Good. Makimono trade pattern scroll comprising 21 (of 22) numbered multi-coloured stencil dyed calico paper samples (16 x c2.5 cm) for choosing decorative chintz textiles. Japan, mid Edo period. c1780. Overall size 32 x 181.5 cm. Right russet-red stencilled border intact; left border is lacking; blank margins neatly restored; some neat old repairs & minor age soiling; colours fresh and in very good general condition. Primary sources for Japanese stencil designs. Rare trade catalogue with calico patterns arranged in the form of a scroll made up for offering a variety of popular Wasarasa Indian- style textiles available. The cloth merchant has brush-numbered each sample in ink in the blank margin between patterns; right border in the shape of a russet-red kilim with traces of having been fastened to a hook. As cotton was unknown in Japan, decorative cotton textiles imported from India or Indonesia became popular and increasingly sought after by the ruling daimo and merchant classes, before cultivation began during the Edo period. The use of Katagama stencils for dyeing fabrics made it possible to produce a great variety of chintzes to satisfy the sophisticated demands of the prosperous town dwellers.
