This is the famous biography about the early years of the renowned Irish author, James Joyce (1882-1941), that was written by Stanislaus Joyce (1884-1955), James's brother. Introduction and Notes by Richard Ellmann. Preface by T. S. Eliot. Index in back. Excerpt from front flap describing Stanislaus's biography: "[T]his is both a work of literary distinction and an amazing portrait of a young man in his times. . Quoted in the text are several unpublished or uncollected pieces of early Joyce writings ." James became a leading figure of modern and avant-garde literature. Stanislaus was also a man of letters, but his literary works tended to be more "academic" and nonfictional in nature.

Paperback. Condition: New. The authorâs strange and sinuous tour de force has become a classic of modernist and lesbian literature since its first publication in 1936. Set in Berlin, Paris, and Vienna during the decadent period between the two World Wars, Nightwood âbelongs to that small class of books that somehow reflect a time or an epoch.â Nightwood is the story of Robin Vote and those she destroys â" her husband the âBaron,â their child Guido, and the two women, Nora and Jenny, who love her; the whole is illuminated by the fantastic monologues of the renegade doctor Matthew OâConnor. Most striking of all is Barnesâs unparalleled stylistic innovation, which led T. S. Eliot to proclaim the book âso good a novel that only sensibilities train on poetry can wholly appreciate it.â 182p.

This is a very nice copy of the true British first edition of this nonfiction work about the Soviet atrocities in Poland from 1939-1945. T.S. Eliot writes a preface explaining the importance of this then-anonymous work and why he is championing its publication. Book condition: Very good in dark blue boards with gold lettering on the spine. FFEP in front doesn't lay flat (see photo) but book is tight. Dust jacket has small tears and wrinkles to top edge and to bottom of spine but I think very good considering the age. (Again, see photos.).
