Published by Malhame & Co, U.S., 1929
Seller: The Bark of the Beech Tree, Depoe Bay, OR, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. The title page of this popular little devotional book for kids says that it is "in language so simple that every child can understand" and that it's "combining much useful instruction with a large selection of Devotions and Prayers." I say "little" - the book is just over 4" x 3". It has been published in numerous editions and with many different bindings. This copy is bound in a hard yellow, marbled celluloid with fabric hinges. I'm just not sure where this edition from Malhame features in the bibliography of this work. There are many illustrations - chapter headings, tailpieces and full page pictures, including some in color. This copy has condition issues. The fabric hinges are a little frayed, there is a chip out of the celluloid on the front corner, the crucifix that was once set into the inside of the front cover is missing, the frontispiece has been torn out, the first couple of pages have a short tear down from the top edge, and although all edges are gilt, the gilt is a little rubbed. On the plus side, the "Remembrance" presentation page has NOT been filled out, and the further you get into the book the better it is. The majority of the textblock is excellent. A good plus copy of an uncommon binding.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Green, pebbled cloth with blind-stamped borders and a gilt title on front cover. Interior is clean and unmarked. No statement of date (circa 1876-1893). Frontispiece with tissue guard. 30 pages. 6 x 4 inches. [Oiled Feather Series]. A short work, an admonishment to those who have let themselves appear seedy, either through folly or evil ways (and not old age or misfortune), which spells out both the negative influence and the troubles which this kind of appearance brings on others as well as on oneself. The author describes handful of persons, notes their demeaned state, and entertainingly hands out a fair bit of ridicule--word to the wise. Also, seedy homes makes seedy husbands! Philip Bennett Power (1822-1899) was born in Ireland and graduated from Trinity College, Dublin. He entered the ministry of the Church of England in 1846. He served congregations in Leicester, Holloway (London), and Worthing until 1865. [The American Sunday-School Union held the New York office location of ''8 & 10 Bible House, Astor Place'' from the approximate years of 1876 to 1893. The copyright page states: ''Republished from the London Edition after revision by the Committee of Publication.''].
