Die Grundschule und das Gymnasium besuchte er in Oradea, wo er mit einem Gedicht 1953 debütierte. Er studierte Medizin und Philologie an der Babes-Bolzai-Universität in Cluj/Klausenburg, wo er schon während des Studiums als Korrektor und später als Redakteur arbeitete. Das wahre Debüt kam mit "die Skizze", "eine Partie Schach"(1954) und dem Prosabuch "Fuga/Der Lauf"(1958). Seit 1970 ist er Chefredakteur bei der Wochezeitschrift "Tribuna/Die Tribüne" und Sekretär des Schriftstellerverbandes in Klausenburg, Siebenbürgen. Bis 1989 war Dumitru Radu Popescu Präsident des Rumänischen Schriftstellerverbandes und Leiter der Zeitschrift "Contemporanul/Der Zeitgenosse".
