She was a remarkable woman, a friend to everyone who knew her, from her Indian companion Tilano, who was an elder of San Ildefonso, to Niels Bohr, Robert Oppenheimer, and the other atomic scientists who worked at Los Alamos during World War II. The quality of the country, of the many kinds of people, and of the central character come through excellently." --Oliver La Farge Peggy Pond Church (1903-1987) has been called the First Lady of New Mexican Poetry; 'a significant American voice.' Born in 1903 on a ranch in the territory of New Mexico, Church lived in Pajarito Canyon and at the Los Alamos Ranch School before being uprooted during the war to live the second half of her life in Taos, Berkeley, and Santa Fe. In 1984 she received the Governor's Award for Excellence and Achievement in the Arts and was also named a Living Treasure of Santa Fe. Church also wrote eight volumes of poetry during her life, along with this book, her own memoir of Edith Warner. Connie Fox Boyd, a New Mexico painter, made 20 sketches near Otowi for the book. Dan Stouffer created the cover illustration. This copy has a sunburnt spine, bruise at head of spine and a scar on rear cover from removal of a sticker. Paperback storage crease but no reading creases. Interior is tight & clean . POS on ffep, some light pencil underlining found early in text. Copyrights 1959 & 1960. Manufactured in U.S.A.
