Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. CANADA THE JOURNALS OF SUSANNA MOODIE BY ATWOOD & PACHTER 1997 SLIPCASE. I quote from the Introduction (by David Staines of the University of Ottawa): The culmination of the Atwood-Pachter collaboration is The Journals of Susanna Moodie, a uniquely Canadian livre d artiste. With his… deeply historical sensibility and his passionate commitment to Canadian identity, Pachter recognizes in Atwood s poetic text and its central character objective correlatives for many of the themes that have been haunting his own personal encounter with his country s history and its human resources. And he, in turn, provides the poetry with a new frame, a new framework, and an evocative visual complement. Their Journals is the masterwork in the long collaboration between the verbal artist and the visual artist. I am therefore very pleased to offer: The Journals of Susanna Moodie, with text (poetry) by Margaret Atwood and illustrated by Charles Pachter. This large-sized hard cover book in its sturdy slipcase (8 ¾ x 10 ¾ inches, unpaginated) was published by Houghton Mifflin Boston and New York, dated 1997 and I guess, a First Edition thus. The book is bound in white boards with a dark blue cloth quarter spine and gilt and dark blue titles and the slipcase is most blue with white titles. In addition to the Introduction, there is a memoir by Charles Pachter about his collaboration with Atwood. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The slipcase is clean, its matte finish just a little scuffed but there are not splits or any real damage. The hard covers of the book are clean, unbumped and the titles on the cover bright and attractive. The gilt titles on the spine seem a bit faded to me, as does the cloth of the spine itself. Inside, there is a former owner s boldly but attractively inked name and date on the first blank page. Otherwise, the book is bright and clean throughout. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 39pp. Stated: "First Edition" with no printings or number line cited: presumed first printing. Glossy brown boards with bold white lettering on spine and lower third front cover, beneath large, tinted photo-portrait of two subjects at stream's edge in forest; taupe endpapers. P…hoto-portraits throughout on glassy pages, interspersed with poetry. Binding relaxed between half-title page (where signed) verso and page of Ralph Lemon's introduction to the content, preceding the Frontispiece and title page, else unqualifiedly Fine: No remainder mark; no previous owner names; nugatory bumps to lower corners (perhaps incurred during book manufacture); clean text. From Ralph Lemon's introduction: [The book is] "a reimagined dance ["Persephone", originally choreographed by Ralph Lemon for the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival] in a series of tableaux surrounded by the wild, spring nature of the Berkshires, this collaboration of among choreographer, photographer, and dancers evolved in the presence of the mechanical and emotional perspective of the camera's lens. Through this collaboration we discovered a new method derived from both our mediums. The addition of inspired poems by Evan Boland and Rita Dove brings to this work the focus of language, the energy of sounds, many possible interpretations and the continued exploration of the possibilities that reside within the intersections of disparate art forms." Flatsigned on half-title page by Philip Trager, Ralph Lemon, and Andrew Szegedy-Maszak.
