Hard Cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. No dustwrapper, slight fading to top edge of green boards, a slight smell suggesting that the book has been kept in a shed though this should fade, but otherwise a good tight copy of this hard-cover book. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. IZWI (Stem/Voice) South African Literary Arts Magazine. Four Rare Issues 1972-74 IZWI is the literary arts magazine that provided a voice that went against the grain of Apartheid - publishing the works and opinions of writers who contributed their subversive and progressive worldvie…ws. The bilingual magazine was published in both Afrikaans and English and was edited by Phil de Plessis and other co-editors in Crown Mines, Johannesburg. The publication had several unique qualities: One was that it was usually forty pages in length and the paper was handcrafted. In addition to its many literary contributors, IZWI also featured the original works of visual artists. For their contribution, these writers and artists were regularly terrorised and even imprisoned by the apartheid government, which caused many of them to escape into exile. Print run for the magazine was just 250 copies each, which makes the magazines very rare indeed. Publication of the magazine eventually ceased in 1974 with the final memorable double issue (included in this listing). It was due to the legacy of IZWI that other publications such as Donga, Staffrider, and Inspan emerged to carry on the legacy of agitation. Issues for sale - all had a print run of just 25 copies: Issue no.4 (1972) Issue no. 6 (1972) Issue no 12 (1973) Issue no 19 & 20 - double issue (1974) Enquire for price of individual issues.

Softcover. Condition: Very good. No jacket. First edition. Vol.3 No.13. 4to. Original pictorial wrappers. IZWI (Voice/Stem) was an avant-garde South African literary-arts magazine published from Johannesburg (specifically Crown Mines), notable for its community of writers and artists operating outside mainstream (i.e., apartheid…) norms. It's culturally significant for its role in fostering South Africa's literary counter-culture, its aesthetic and socio-political commentary marking a shift from earlier European-derived poetic forms to distinctive Southern African voice.
