It is decorated with roll XXVI, i.e., Oldham FP.g.(6), signed RW, which stand for Robert Way, although this roll (and its variant) was not always used by him (Pearson, p.72). An excellent, clean copy of the first revised edition, with additional texts, of this important theological work a compendium of all the canons of the ancient Catholic Church. It was edited by the French canon lawyer François Pithou (1543-1621) from old manuscripts including the Collectio Dionysio-Hadriana , a book of regulations given to Charlemagne by Pope Adrian in 774 henceforward the authorized collection of council and papal decisions (Heidecker, p.18). This corpus was first edited in Mainz in 1525, in opposition to the tenets of the Lutheran Reformation; this edition bears indeed an additional titlepage with the Mainz imprint, as well as the original dedicatory epistles. The work comprises the canons authorized by the Apostles, those approved by the official ecclesiastical councils of late antiquity, from Nicaea to Chalcedon, with a list of the recorded attendees, and those approved by Popes, with short biographies drawn from Platina. Organized by subject, the chapters discuss, among others, the appointment of bishops, Easter time, the exclusion of bigamous clerics or clerics guilty of crimes, the primacy of the Pope, the baptism of heretics, eunuchs, Cathars, murder, Arians, apostates and usury. The work also includes an anti-Lutheran treatise on the primacy of the Roman Church, produced for the Mainz edition; a treatise on canons by the Carthaginian deacon Fulgentius Ferrandus, with Crisconius s concordance and index, both published in Paris in 1598; and an epistle on the Roman canons by the bishop Stephanus Dionysius. The main work was reprinted in 1687, with different accompanying texts. Columbia, St Louis, UMD and St Bonaventure copies recorded in the US; none at the BL.

Published by Adrien Périer (ex officina Plantiniana),, Paris,, 1599
First edition of a collection of 15 classical and mediaeval school texts on the art of rhetoric, in a rare 16th-century French prize binding from Aire-sur- la-Lys, in the French department Pas-de Calais, on the border of French Flanders and Artois. Although most of these works had been published before in some form, the present collection was based on an unpublished manuscript. It therefore provided an independent source for these works as well as bringing them together in one convenient volume for students. The manuscripts edited here came from the library of the celebrated French lawyer, humanist and scholar François Pithou (1543-1621), a pupil of Cujas and later attorney-general at Troyes. He is believed to have edited the texts himself for the present publication. With 2 owners' names and 2 bookplates. In very good condition and only slightly trimmed, leaving generous margins, with marginal water stains in a few leaves, reaching the text in 1 quire. Binding rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down, slightly rubbed and with superficial cracks, traces of 2 pair of leather ties. A 1599 collection of works on rhetoric, taken from a previously unpublished manuscript.l Adams R448; BMC STC French, p. 256; for Pithou: NBG XL, cols. 345-346. Contemporary gold-tooled calf with 18th-century restorations, sewn on 4 double cords, each board with an oval laurel wreath with berries, above it on the front board an oval with the arms of Aire-sur-la-Lys (an eagle) flanked by "S.P.Q. . Arien[sis]", the whole in a frame of double fillets, each of the 5 spine compartments with a single flower double fillets. Rebacked with the original backstrip laid down. With woodcut headpieces, tailpieces and decorated initials (at least 5 series, the largest with finely cut mythical creatures). Set in roman types with incidental italic, Greek and Hebrew. Pages: [4], 382, [15], [1 blank] pp.

(Leipzig), Gleditsch, 1705. Folio. 32 Bl., 492 S.; 6 Bl., 488 S., 45 Bl., 86 S., 6 Bl., S. 87-140. Mit 2 gestochenen Titelvignetten u. 2 ganzseitigen gestochenen Stammbäumen. Pergament d. Zeit (fleckig u. verstaubt). - Schulte III/1, 564 ff. - Leicht gebräunt u. fast durchgehend wasserrandig. Erster Titel fleckig.
