This is a remarkable and deeply evocative book that blends motoring nostalgia with wartime resilience. Authored by Tom Swallow and Arthur H. Pill, it's a facsimile reproduction of a series of hand-drawn magazines created by British prisoners of war in Stalag IVB, a German POW camp near Muhlberg-on-Elbe during World War II. The book reproduces the work of the Muhlberg Motor Club, a group of POWs who, despite dire conditions, created a monthly motoring magazine from May 1944 to March 1945. Content: Each issue featured imaginary road tests, spoof motor show reports, technical articles, cartoons, and even used car ads?all crafted from memory and ingenuity. Craftsmanship: Materials were scavenged or improvised?ink from quinine pills, glue from fermented millet soup, and illustrations drawn with tinted pen and ink. Ref X 4.
