Con motivo del 150 Aniversario de la Revista "El Consultor de los Ayuntamientos y de los Juzgados", hemos querido rendir homenaje a los diferentes pueblos de España con la publicación de esta carpeta que contiene…diecisiete láminas, en las que se reproducen los tipos populares correspondientes a las diecisiete Comunidades Autónomas Españolas. La mayor parte pertenecen a la obra de dos maravillosos grabadores clásicos, el español Juan de la Cruz y el francés Pigal; el resto de los tipos, al no figurar en la obra de aquéllos, los hemos recogido de Ribelles y de la obra "Las mujeres españolas, portuguesas y americanas", publicada en tres volúmenes, en Madrid en 1872-1876. Juan de la Cruz Cano y Olmedilla, autor de diez de los grabados, los publicó en su "Colección de trajes de España, tanto antiguos como modernos, que comprehende todos los de sus Dominios. Dividida en dos volúmenes, con ocho cuadernos de a doce Estampas cada uno. Madrid, Casa de M. Copin, Carrera de S. Gerónimo XDCCXXVII". No se sabe a ciencia cierta el número de láminas que llegó a grabar Juan de la Cruz, ya que se hicieron varias tiradas, bajo distintas portadas. Los dibujos de estos diez tipos son de Manuel de la Cruz, Antonio Carnicero, Josef Muñoz y Frías, Josef Ximeno, Luis Paret y Agustina Azcona. Los tres grabados de la obra de Edme-Jean Pigal se publicaron en la "Collectión de Costumes des diverses Provinces de L'Espagne. Par Pigal, París, Clement F. (1825)". De tamaño folio, consta de portada y 100 láminas litografiadas y en color. El dibujo de estos tres tipos populares se debe a White. El grabado del tipo popular asturiano está recogido de la obra "Colección de Trajes de España", que vio la luz en 1825 y que comprendía 112 estampas dibujadas por José Ribelles Helip y grabados por Juan Carrafa. Obra publicada por la Calcografía Real en cuadernos de ocho estampas cada uno. Expresamos nuestro agradecimiento a la Fundación ICO y al Grupo Editorial "La Ley" por la colaboración que nos ha prestado para la realización de la presente carpeta. Carpeta ilustrada con carpetilla interior conteniendo las 17 láminas de medidas 35 x 30. Tapa blanda de editorial ilustrada. Sin subrayados ni anotaciones. Perfecto estado de conservación.

With 100 Hand Coloured Lithographed Plates Two works in one large folio volume, each work with fifty numbered hand coloured lithographed plates depicting humorous scenes, each with two or three figures in costume of the period. Contemporary half brown roan over marbled boards with tw…o red morocco gilt lettering labels on front cover. Smooth spine ruled in gilt, marbled edges, some foxing and minor staining. Not dated but 1822, plates lithographed by Langlume. Overall, an excellent copy. (349*256 mm). (Ray p196. Colas 2366 and 2365. Hiler p710. Ray, The art of the French illustrated book, 128 & 129). Beraldi makes the painter Pigal the occasion for denouncing the vulgarity of the caricaturists of the 1820s, allowing only that his Scenes de societe may offer 'some information about the costume of the period.' The 'superlatively vulgar' Pigal, he concludes was 'the Paul de Kock of the print' (x, 276-278.) Surely Baudelaire (p995) is nearer the mark in what he writes of this 'amusing and kindly' artist. 'Pigal's scenes of the people are good. It is not that the originality is very lively, nor even that the design is very comic. Pigal is comic in moderation, but the feeling in his compositions is good and just. These are vulgar truths, but still truths.' Pigal does play to the groundlings, and no one would accuse him of excessive delicacy, but he knew his world and could depict in incisively in his lithographs. Consider the economy of 'Rely on me, my dear fellow,' of Scenes de societe (no 30). A nervous suitor, hat in hand and fumbled glove on the floor before him, is approaching a bureaucrat, who gives him his little finger. In the official's other hand is the suitor's letter, which will shortly join many similar appeals in the basket beside him. This study of abjectness and disdain epitomises the insolence of office.
