Contemporary or near contemporary stamped vellum, edges speckled red, front hinge cracked but just holding, foxing to prelims, final leaves and near the plates, otherwise good. Bookplate of N. Vansittard to front paste-down, book label Winnard Bequest to front fly-leaf, unobtrusive blind stamps of the Wigan Free library. Contains a number of important contributions: Smeaton on Globes; Priestley on Phlogiston (three articles); E. W. Gray on Amphibia (Gray was Secretary to the Royal Society); Morgan on survival rates; Piazzi on the eclipse of the sun, Anderson on a bituminous lake in Trinidad; Baillie on changes in the ovary; Saunders on Bhutan and Tibet; Herschel on the discovery of a comet by his sister Caroline Herschel; a tabular presentation of the coming of spring by Robert Marsham; Waring on correspondent values, and on the resolution of attractive powers; Walker on cooling mercury; Herschel?s catalogue of a second thousand new nebulae; Maskelyne on vision, Nicholson on electricity; Milner on nitrous acid. Please note the condition problem with the front hinge and the slight foxing (see photos), but nevertheless in many respects a seminal volume, surprisingly rare in commerce. Herschel?s Observations on a comet (pages 151-153) continues the acknowledgement of his sister?s contribution to scientific discovery, one of the very earliest women whose work was recognised. Sir, The last time I was in town, you expressed a wish to see my observations on the comet which my sister Caroline Herschel discovered in the evening of the 21st of last December?(page 151).
