Soft Covers. Condition: NF. No Jacket. Photos, Art, Drawings, Diagrams, Maps (illustrator). 1st. New Zealand, as an island nation is, and always has been, dependent on the sea for its international communications. Vital to this has been those who manned the ships that have brought the produce it needs and carried the exports that provide its wealth. In early times the sea also provided trade and passenger links on all its coasts. This excellent study of NZ seafaring over the first century of the country's development explores an area little covered in the multitude of nautical books with NZ emphis and content --- the life and work of the ships crews in both the age of sail and of steam. Atkinson, a professional historian, has divided his work into eigh chapters --- Canvas and Coal (which examines work at sea); A Murderous Occupation (health and hazards); Songs and Stories (lore of the sea); Three Groans For the Skipper (control and conflict); Unity is Strength (seafaring unionism); On the Beach (the waterfront) and The Brotherhood of the Sea (crew culture.) Through these the author builds a graphic picture of all aspects of seafaring, a unique way of life and one which contributed so much to the development of NZ. Atkinson's comprehensive text dispalys his deep knowledge of his subject and is complemented by a magnificent collection of b/w illustrations, mainly photographs, but also art reproductions, drawings, diagrams, graphs and maps. Publisher Te Papa Press is the imprint of the Museum of New Zealand at Wellington, first edition of 2001, 172 pages including list of abbreviations, bibliography, glossary and index, illustrated in b/w throughout. Pictorial card covers with flaps at front and rear are NF, ditto the text block, no inscriptions.

Soft Covers. Condition: NF. No Jacket. Photos, Art, Maps, Diagrams, Documents (illustrator). Reprint. Sub-titled "How Railways Made New Zealand" is a history of the influences this form of transport had on the the country and its people. It recalls the "Golden Age" of rail travel, often from the recollections of the travellers, with fond memories of long journeys in trains hauled by steam engines, frequent stops, tea in immensely strong china cups, pies and chunks of fruit cake hurridly purchased at crowded refreshment rooms at stations, often in isolated towns --- the time when trail travelled was something of a real adventure. The railway was vital in opening up the hinterland for settlement and development. In latter years, however, with road and air travel becoming popular, the rail struggled to maintain passenger services, with freight services predominating. Atkinson covers all aspects of the system, from construction to near extinction, but wonders whether environmental factors and energy problems may eventually lead to a revival of the fortunes of rail. First published 2007, with this reprint that year. 250 pages including notes, bibliography and index, lavishly illustrated throughout with colour and b/w photos and art, the latter including works by noted artists and many Railway promotional posters, documents, maps/diagrams. Pictorial card covers (photo to front, colour posters at back) with flaps front and back are NF, ditto text block, no inscriptions.
