Based on Giorgio Bassani's 1958 novel, "Gli occhili d'oro." Dr. Fadigati (Noiret) is a homosexual doctor living in Fascist Italy, where he befriends a Jewish family. Bassani also helped write the screenplay for Michelangelo Antonioni's 1953 film, "I vinti," as well as Luchino Visconti's 1954 film, "Senso."
