About the book >.>.> Since he gave up his editorship of The Dancing Times a few years ago, Philip Richardson has devoted all his spare time to historical research. His library of books on dancing, some dating back nearly five hun-dred years, is the biggest private collection of its kind in the world, and his frequent reference to original sources of the appropriate per?od makes this book a work of major authority. In it, he traces the origins of the dances of the 19th century, some of which still grace our present-day ballrooms. He reveals how changes in the social life of the people brought corresponding changes in social dancing. Thus the passing of the Minuet and the coming of such dances as the Waltz, the Polka and the Barn Dance were clearly in the nature of logical progression and not just haphazard happenings. For the record, he sets out at the end of the book precise and specific details of the steps of each dance as it was danced. (LL).
