First Edition
HardBack. Condition: Very Good. No jacket. First Edition. 1st Edition, Cambridge University Press 1988. 4to. Very good clean tight sound sqaure, no bookplate, inscriptions or marks of any kind, Bound in bright gilt lettered brown cloth gently rubbed to head of spine and with red gilt lettered and embossed label to upper. Philp Henslowes unique Diary of theatrical enterprises records many plays, amongst which are Shakespeares Taming of the Shrew, Titus Andronicus and Henry VI Part 1. Henslowe and his son in law actor Edward Alleyne built London theatres The Rose, The Fortune and The Hope, ran the most successful acting companies including The Lord Admirals Men of which Shakespeare was a member and The Lord Stranges Men. The Dairy also records receipts from play performances, expenditures, payments and notes on hiring actors. Previous speculation dismissed Henslowe as ignorant, disorderly and grasping. Carson shows him to be a benign and efficient businessman. A great addition to the library of reader, scholar and collector alike.
