"Josef Ferdinand Benesch was born on January 4, 1875, in Kummrowitz near Brno, in the municipality of Kleinmariazell (Moravia), the eldest of six children. His father, Josef Benesch (born on March 20, 1850) in Gr. Hyska; died in 1906 in Brno) was a cabinetmaker by trade. Since he also painted pleasant furniture, the boy became familiar with paint and brushes at an early age. Benesch's mother (born on November 18, 1847; died in 1935 in Brno) was named cacilie. She was nee Hersan and came from Kummrowitz, where the young Josef Ferdinand also attended elementary school. He then attended the Realschule (secondary school) in Brno for four years. He had to abandon his studies for financial reasons." - translated from biography section.

"Ludwig Karl Strauch was born on the 11th of July, 1875 in Vienna as the eldest child of master meerschaum turner Josef Strauch and his wife, Elisabeth. He had two siblings: Felix, who would also paint to a lesser extent, and Emilia, who died in early adulthood. Driven by the desire to become a painter, Ludwig Karl, only 15 years old and destined for a technical career, voluntarily exchanged his studies at the State Trade School for the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1890. As a guest student, he received instruction from Professors August Eisenmenger, who headed the master class in historical painting; Christian Griepenkerl, who specialized in allegorical representations using ancient mythology and portrait painting; and Rudolf Carl Huber, who primarily taught his students animal painting. Only in his last year of training - 1898/99 - did Straunch become a regular student at the academy in order to obtain a degree." - translated from introduction. VG, minor wear at corners of wraps.

"Current knowledge about Alois Beran-Polly comes primarily from a short biography published in 'Life and Work of Sudeten German Teachers' Volume 1, published by the Pohrlitz Teachers' Association in 1932. Alois Beran (also Beran-Polly) was born on June 16, 1884, in Wolking, Datschitz District (Sittinggras Parish, No. III/43) the son of Heinrich Beran and Aloisia Beran, nee Polly, one of four siblings. After completing his studies at the teacher training college in Brno, he worked as a teacher for several years. Always feeling the urge for his own artistic work, he changed places of work quite frequently until he finally settled in Vienna. Whether this move dates back to the period before 1914-18, when, according to oral tradition, he first had to serve in the military and then spent some time in Russian captivity, is unknown. In any case, he was granted leave in the Austrian capital due to illness, but also for study purposes. During this time, he created murals for students. Eventually, Beran became a civil servant at the Central Pedagogical Library in Vienna; in 1925, he retired - at the age of only 41. This year also marked the year he maried the Russian woman, Maria Lototzki." - translated from biography section.
