Mineralogen Anton Schrötter von Kristelli (1802-1875)]. - Pettenkofer [.] besuchte [.] bis 1837 das Münchener Alte Gymnasium und studierte anschließend in München Pharmazie, Naturwissenschaft und Medizin. 1843 schloss er sein Studium mit der Promotion zum Doktor der Medizin, Chirurgie und Ge…burtshilfe ab. Gleichzeitig erwarb er die Approbation als Apotheker. Danach beschäftigte er sich in Würzburg mit Chemie und wechselte dann nach Gießen ins Labor Justus von Liebigs. 1847 ernannte man Pettenkofer zum Professor für medizinische Chemie an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, deren Rektor er 1865 wurde. Im gleichen Jahr wurde er in München erster deutscher Professor für Hygiene und richtete dort von 1876 bis 1879 das erste Hygieneinstitut [Max von Pettenkofer-Institut] ein. 1883 verlieh man Pettenkofer den Erbadel; 1890 bis 1899 war er Präsident der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften [.] (Wikipedia). --- Der in Olmütz geborene Anton Schrötter, Sohn eines Apothekers, studierte ab 1822 zunächst auf Wunsch seines Vaters in Wien Medizin, wechselte dann aber unter dem Einfluss von Friedrich Mohs zu den naturwissenschaftlichen Fächern, speziell der Mineralogie. 1827 erhielt er eine Assistentenstelle für Physik und Mathematik an der Universität Wien. 1830 wurde er Professor für Physik und Chemie am Technischen Institut Joanneum in Graz. Während eines halbjährigen Urlaubs im Jahre 1838 besuchte er chemische Institute in Göttingen, Heidelberg, Frankfurt und Paris. In Gießen machte er sich bei Justus von Liebig mit der organischen Elementaranalyse vertraut. Ab 1843 arbeitete er als Professor für technische Chemie am Polytechnischen Institut der Universität Wien und übernahm dort 1845 die Professur für allgemeine Chemie. Schrötter war neben Baumgartner, Ettingshausen und Haidinger einer der Begründer der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien und wurde 1850 ihr Generalsekretär. Die Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina wählte Schrötter 1856 zu ihrem Mitglied. Ab 1868 leitete er das österreichische Hauptmünzamt und wurde gleichzeitig zum Ministerialrat ernannt. Er wurde 1874 in den Ruhestand versetzt und eröffnete in seiner Wohnung ein Privatlaboratorium, in dem er Studien über Edelmetalle betrieb. 1875 starb er in Wien. Schrötter hat in seinem Leben ca. 60 wissenschaftliche Publikationen verfasst. Ab 1845 beschäftigte Schrötter sich intensiv mit Phosphor. 1848 gelang ihm der Nachweis der schon von Berzelius geäußerten Vermutung, dass roter Phosphor eine allotrope Modifikation des weißen Phosphors, nicht aber eine Phosphorverbindung ist. Schrötter wandelte weißen Phosphor durch Erhitzen in roten um, den man zeitweise Schrötterschen Phosphor nannte. Sein Verfahren zur Darstellung desselben revolutionierte die Streichholzindustrie, wo roter Phosphor schon bald als Bestandteil der Reibflächen genutzt wurde. Er war ein Organisator in Industrie und Wissenschaft sowie Berater bei den Vorbereitungen zur Novara-Expedition und zur Österreich-Ungarischen Nordpolexpedition. ge Gewicht in Gramm: 500.

Dez. 1818, Neffe des Hof-…und Leib-Apothekers Dr. Franz Xaver Pettenkofer (1783 bis 1850), studierte, besonders unter dem Einfluss des Genannten, den er in seiner Doktordissert. als 'Lehrer und Erzieher' bezeichnet, Med. und hauptsächlich Chemie in München, Würzburg, Giessen, wo Fuchs, Scherer, Liebig und Bischoff seine bevorzugteren Lehrer waren. Er promovierte 1843 in München mit der Diss.: "Über Mikania Guaco", die er dem genannten Onkel widmete und trat 1845 als Assistent beim Hauptmünzamt in München ein. Schon vor und während dieser Zeit publizierte v. Pettenkofer eine Reihe wertvoller Arbeiten physiol.-chem. Inhalts, darunter: "Über eine neue Reaction auf Galle und Zucker" (Liebig's Annal. 1844), worin die von Pettenkofer entdeckte Gallensäureprobe mitgeteilt ist, ferner Studien über den Schwefel-Cyangehalt des menschlichen Speichels, über Hippursäure im Harn, Kreatin und Kreatinin u.s.w. 1847 erhielt er die Berufung als Prof. e. o. d. "diätetischen" Chemie an der Münchener Univ., und nun begann von Pettenkofer seine Aufmerksamkeit spez. auf die Verwertung der Chemie für die Entscheidung hygienischen Fragen zu lenken, was ihn schliesslich ganz auf das Gebiet der Hygiene überführte. Es folgten die in ihrer Art epochemachenden Untersuchungen zur "Bestimmung der Kohlensäure in der Luft und im Wasser" mit einer neuen Methode zum Nachweise der Kohlensäure in der Luft, ferner Arbeiten über die Ventilationsverhältnisse in den Wohnungen, physikalischen Verhältnisse der Kleidung etc. v. Pettenkofer prüfte den Unterschied zwischen Ofen- und Luftheizung, den Luftwechsel durch das Mauerwerk, die Bodenluftverhältnisse, namentlich die Verunreinigungen der Bodenluft durch Gasausströmungen unter der Erde, die Münchener Kanal- und Abflusssysteme, stellte in Gemeinschaft mit v. Voit mit Hülfe eines auf Kosten Königs Maximilian v. Bayern beschafften "Respirationsapparats" Untersuchungen über Atmung und Stoffwechsel an Menschen und Tieren an (1861) und begründete durch alle diese Arbeiten die experimentelle Methodik für die Hygiene, der er damit die wissenschaftliche exakte Basis lieferte. Eine andere Reihe von Forschungen betraf die 1855 begonnenen Studien über die Cholera und deren Verhältnis zum Grundwasser. 1853 zum ord. Prof. ernannt, trat v. Pettenkofer lebhaft für die Begründung besonderer hygien. Lehrstühle und Institute ein. Seiner thatkräftigen Initiative war es zu danken, dass zunächst an den bayrischen Univ. 3 ordentl. Lehrstühle für Hygiene geschaffen wurden, deren erster 1865 in München ihm selbst übertragen wurde. Ebenso wurde nach v. Pettenkofer's Plänen 1875 das erste hygienische Institut daselbst erbaut, das gleichzeitig Muster weiterer ähnlicher Einrichtungen und Pflanzstätte einer ausgebreiteten Hygieniker-Schule wurde, als deren Stifter v. Pettenkofer anzusehen ist. Aus seiner Schule gingen hier u.a. hervor Wolffhügel, Soyka, Renk, Emmerich, die mit den v. Pettenkofer eingeführten und begründeten Methoden arbeiteten. 1873 wurde er zum Vorsitzenden der vom Reichskanzler berufenen Cholerakommission ernannt, 1883 wurde ihm der erbliche Adel verliehen, 1889 wurde er Präsident der bayr. Akademie der Wissensch. Auch sonst wurden v. Pettenkofer bei Gelegenheit seiner 70. und 80. Geburtstagsfeier, sowie 1893 aus Anlass seines 50jähr. Doktorjubiläums mannigfache Ehrungen bereitet.
