Precision engineering is a grouping of multidis ciplinary scientific and engineering skills and techniques, firmly based on dimensional metrology, by which a wide range of new advanced technology products is made possible. In the last 5 - 10 years we have witnessed dramatic progress in precision engineering, particularly by the rapid development of its important sub-sets, micro-engineering and nanotechnology. I t is a part icular pleasure for me and my colleagues on the Organising Committee to welcome you to Braunschweig on the occasion of this the first joint international meeting in high precision manufacturing/precision engineering to be held in Germany. Our aim is to bring together the world's leading precision engineering practitioners from areas of application as diverse as optics for astronomy, micro and nano machining process research, design and development of ul tra preclslon machine tools and metrology equipment, advanced materials, bio medical research and new sensor/transducer systems. The last 5-10 years have witnessed dramatic progress in precision engineering, particularly due to the rapid development in the fields of micro engineering and nanotechnology. Beeindruckend ist vor allem, dass sich die verschiedenen Bauphasen nicht auf Anhieb in der Gesamterscheinung der Abteikirche erkennen lassen.In der vorliegenden Baumonographie wird die komplizierte Geschichte der Errichtung von St.-Ouen näher untersucht. Einen besonderen Schwerpunkt bildet dabei die Analyse der ausgewogen konzipierten Architektur des Chores, der zwischen 1318 und 1339 errichtet wurde und als architektonischer Höhepunkt des späten Style Rayonnant gilt. Die baustilistische Untersuchung stellt dar, welche architektonischen Einflüsse das Bauwerk geprägt haben.Das Resultat ist kein Werk 'doktrinärer Gotik', wie seit Georg Dehio das Spätrayonnant ganz allgemein und überwiegend im negativen Sinne bewertet wurde. Vielmehr ist es das Werk eines genialen Architekten, der imstande war, seine von anderen Bauten der näheren und weiteren Umgebung gewonnenen Eindrücke zu einem eigenständigen und in sich stimmigen Ganzen zu verarbeiten. Dieser Stil hat die Bauverantwortlichen des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts offenbar noch so begeistert, dass sie am architektonischen Grundkonzept des 14. Jahrhunderts festgehalten haben.
