Hard cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No dustjacket. Inscribed "To Antonia My Very Best Wishes Richard Weisman 9-22-2003". Richard Weisman was a high profile businessman, philanthropist, and art collector. Weisman's prescient eye allowed him to assemble a remarkable collection of masterworks that depict some of the 20th century's most important Pop icons and iconography. For Weisman, art represented an opportunity to explore the vast scope of human creativity, free from all constraints. Weisman began a lifetime of collecting with the purchase of his first piece of art: Roberto Matta's 1955 oil on canvas Early Urge. In the years that followed, Weisman steadily assembled not only an exceptional grouping of masterworks, but also a remarkable circle of friends. Weisman became renowned for entertaining athletes, actors, and artists at his homes with gatherings that welcomed a coterie of creatives from Peter Beard, Roy Lichtenstein, and Barnett Newman to Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. BEARD, PETER: Zara's Tales: Perilous Escapades in Equatorial Africa Knopf 2004 First Edition ISBN 0679426590 SIGNED with Beard's four fingertips on the front dustjacket, and the note "Special Delivery to the inestimable Sierra XX and Lots of Love from Peter Beard, Hog Ranch, Nairobbery." On the pictorial front free endpaper he signed "Peter Beard Hog Ranch Nbi". He added his print of four fingertips again on the page with the dik-dik photograph. Beard hand-corrected a typo on the last page of the book, changing "best" to "beast". That makes four pages on which Peter Beard left his personal imprint. A color photo of the author signing the book at the 12/08/04 event at the University of Minnesota's Bell Museum, in the year of publication, and a brochure of the event is included. "From adventurer, explorer, photographer, writer, pied piper Peter Beard-eleven irresistible tales, told to his daughter Zara in his tented encampment at Hog Ranch, Kenya, about life, about living, about Africa." Peter Beard lived a storied, full life and made his mark early and often. Signed with love to this book collector's young daughter.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition as stated, first printing, uniquely signed and multiply embellished by Peter Beard. Oversized gilt decorated red hardcover in illustrated dust jacket. A fine clean tight copy with no markings apart from those of Peter Beard in equally fine unclipped dust jacket, also embellished by Beard. Following are Beard's unique enhancements to this copy: 1) Beard's red fingerprints to top of front panel of dust jacket with his name lined at the base of the panel where he has added "from" Peter Beard (printed) "Hog-Ranch / Nairobbery". 2) signed and inscribed "Peter Beard Hog Ranch Nbi" to front free endpage, with Nbi being his abbreviation of Nairobi where his Hog Ranch is located. 3) Beard's purple fingerprints to bottom of first leaf initialed "P.B." next to them. 4) Under half title stating Zara's Tales Beard has written "from Hog Ranch Nbi". Bookseller's "autographed copy" sticker to front panel of dust jacket (easily removable). While I have seen personalized Beard's books before, this copy is particularly interesting as it is embellished without any personalization to both the dust jacket and the book itself. Rarely have I seen a copy with Beard's markings to the dust jacket, and most signed copies are generally signed to an individual unlike this copy. Rare. Signed by Author(s).

Profusely Illustrated (illustrator). Revised and Updated. SIGNED and inscribed by the author. 'Special Edition Commemorating the Exhibition at the International Center of Photography, New York City, November/December 1977.' Peter Beard [1938 - 2020] was an American artist, photographer and writer who lived in Kenya and New York. The Epilogue is by Dr. Richard M. Laws, Former Director of Tsavo Research Project, Kenya, who comments that 'In Africa today, animal populations are being increasingly confined within limited and unnatural boundaries. more political than ecological. [and] that the increasing concentration of any species in arbitrarily restricted areas will result in overpopulation, habitat destruction, and local. extinction of that species.' Inscription reads, "Dear Gordon, Warmest Greeting and elephantine memories and please stay in touch with those "reports" 2000 a.d. and others. I hope this 20 year accumulation on "STARVO" National Park gives you an idea of my position. Meanwhile many congrats on your work and your awareness! With admiration, Peter (B.)" WITH a 4pp letter written in green ink by Beard addressed to Gordon Stewart, asking for updated information on receipt of the book copies he is sending out (some to the White House), and commentary on the loosely inserted copy of July 31, 1980 NY Times article, "Dead as the Proverbial Dodo." He also has made edits in the margins of the epilogue in green ink, regarding conservation efforts. Title continued: "Its Divers Peoples, Mountains, Rivers, Railroads, Resources, Reserves & Innumerable Rarities, Featuring With Full Perspective, A Twenty Year Illustrated Record of The Great Pachyderm (Loxondonta Africana) and Man together with a Stirring Narrative of Early Life, Exploration, Discover, Daring Missionary Feats & Hunting Episodes in Kenya Colony, Tanganyika, Uganda, Ethopia (sic) and various territories even more remote." 'With the hand-written diaries of Colonel John Henry Patterson, single-minded pursuer of The Man-Easters of Tsavo.' Small 4to, 274pp, gray cloth embossed on front cover, no title at spine. Filled with b&w 'photo engravings and stonetone plates' of big game hunters, natives, elephants, rhinos, lions, *trigger warning* dead animals, famous travelers (Karen Dinesen Von Blixen, Philip Percival etc.), with journal like captions. Spine is sunned, otherwise very good condition, with disturbing imagery.

Published on the occasion of the 1999 exhibition Peter Beard: Fifty Years of Portraits, curated by Peter T. Tunney, at the Fahey/Klein Gallery, Los Angeles. Out of print. Very scarce. Fine. A Near Mint copy. From the publisher: "Throughout his remarkable life, photographer, naturalist, and raconteur Peter Beard has befriended and photographed some of the most prominent figures of our times. Portraiture is woven into the fabric of all of Beard's work, yet to date this relationship has never been carved out and explored. From his earliest attempts at expression as a child to the mania for travel and adventure that overtook Beard as a young man, and onward to Beard's most recent work on assignment, portraiture is a central thread of Beard's career. Beard's 'portraits,' however, rarely conform to the traditional format of this genre. Instead, they embody spontaneity, the moments shared with intimate friends, and the adventurous lives and experiences to which he has long been attracted. A vital chronicler of our times, he has created memorable images of such icons as Picasso, Francis Bacon, Karen Blixen, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Salvador Dali, and Mick Jagger, along with the last great safari hunters, such as J.A. Hunter, Phillip Percival, and Cape-to-Cairo Grogan." Signed by Author.

First edition of this collection featured at the Metropolitan Museum in 1975, focuses on themes of loss, grief, and the intense psychological exploration of the human form following the death of his lover, George Dyer. Oblong octavo, original black wrappers with the front wrapper die-cut to reveal color self-portrait, illustrated throughout. Presentation copy, inscribed twice in red felt tip by Bacon's muse, friend, and collaborator, photographer Peter Beard: On the first page of the introduction, "For Suzan with warmest thoughts and regards as ever, Peter Beard"; and on the first page of the interview section, "for a dead-ele book in the worksâ"like 1984 MOMA Peter Beard 4/13/83 57th 63rd 60th." FrancisÂBaconÂand Peter Beard first met at a gallery opening in 1957. They became fast friends, brought together by their shared personal and artistic motivations.ÂBaconÂwas particularly inspired by Beard's famous aerial photographs depicting decomposing African elephant carcasses. They were massively influential on his meditations on death and decomposition: "For me, the most poignant are the ones of decomposing elephants where, over time, as they disintegrate, the bones form magnificent sculptures, which are not just abstract forms, but have all the memory traces of life's futility and despair."ÂBaconÂpainted nine major portraits of Beard during his career and used his likeness for many other works. Upon his death in 1992, his apartment contained more than 200 of Beard's photographs, signifying their lasting connection and collaboration. In 1972, the Beard conducted a series of interviews withÂBacon in which they discuss how Beard's photographs influenced his painting dubbed, the "Dead Elephant Interviews." Excerpts from these interviews appear in this catalogue for the first time. In very good condition with damp-staining to the top of the front panel, rubbing, and a small tear to cut-out edge. An exceptional association. Francis Bacon was a figurative painter known for his emotionally charged raw imagery and fixation on personal motifs. Best known for his depictions of popes, crucifixions and portraits of close friends, his abstracted figures are typically isolated in geometrical cages which give them vague 3D depth, set against flat, nondescript backgrounds. Bacon said that he saw images "in series", and his work, which numbers c. 590 extant paintings along with many others he destroyed, typically focuses on a single subject for sustained periods, often in triptych or diptych formats. His output can be broadly described as sequences or variations on single motifs; including the 1930s Picasso-influenced bio-morphs and Furies, the 1940s male heads isolated in rooms or geometric structures, the 1950s screaming popes, the mid-to-late 1950s animals and lone figures, the early 1960s crucifixions, the mid to late 1960s portraits of friends, the 1970s self-portraits, and the cooler more technical 1980s paintings. Bacon took up painting in his twenties, having drifted in the late 1920s and early 1930s as an interior decorator, bon vivant and gambler. He said that his artistic career was delayed because he spent too long looking for subject matter that could sustain his interest. His breakthrough came with the 1944 triptych Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, which sealed his reputation as a uniquely bleak chronicler of the human condition. From the mid-1960s he mainly produced portraits of friends and drinking companions, either as single or triptych panels. Following the suicide of his lover George Dyer in 1971 his art became more sombre, inward-looking and preoccupied with the passage of time and death. The climax of this later period is marked by masterpieces, including his 1982's "Study for Self-Portrait" and Study for a Self-Portraitâ"Triptych, 1985â"86.

"Xtra Special Delivery to the wonderful.Jo "May Heavens Choices Blessing be showers upon you (found in Voi Duka 1964) Karen Langeta Box 4191 Nairobery" on the front free endpaper, "To Joe Aug 28 in and from Hog Ranch xv" and on the pre-title page, "+ many happy returns of the day." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Carol Devine Carson. From adventurer, explorer, photographer, writer, pied piper Peter Beardâ"eleven irresistible tales, told to his daughter in his tented encampment at Hog Ranch, Kenya, about life, about living, about Africa. He writes of the East African hills he came to know so well over four decades, where time slows to infinity in a great bottomless, bottle green underwater world . . . about Nairobi in the 1950s, still a quaint, eccentric pioneer town, full of characters of all stripes and tribes, where rhinoceros roamed the streets and local residents went to the movies in pajamas. He writes of the camp he built twelve miles outside of Nairobi so that he would never be off safari, a forty-acre patch of bush called Hog Ranch (abutting Karen Blixenâs plantation), named for the families of warthogs who wandered into camp, a camp populated with waterbuck, suni, dik-diks, leopard, giraffe, and occasionally lion and buffalo.
