Limited edition reprint. Cloth, 8vo, [iv]. xvi.999 pp. The institute was founded on April 8, 1891. One of the first matters dealt with was the purchase of the library of master printer William Blades (1824-1890). Blades' library eventually became the foundation for the collections of the St. Bride Foundation. The Library of the Institute is entirely devoted to works on printing and related subjects and was founded with the object of collecting and preserving the literature that would instruct or interest printers, and provide a reliable source of information on all matters relating to that craft. The scope of the library includes all branches of typographical history; antecedents, the invention controversy, general histories and monographs on towns, presses and individual printers. Also specimens of their work, including the private presses are fully represented. Special attention was given to the practical textbooks of the trade, including composition, stereotyping and electrotyping, ink, paper, presses, and machines. In all 17,500 books are described. Near Fine.
