Original letters home from the front comprising of 16 Complete long letters (Inc two from Morfa Camp, Conway) One incomplete letter dated 30 Sept 1917 , Three notes (one dated April 1920) One Envelope sent ÒOn Active ServiceÓ + Four examples of Edward PayÕs design work 2 bookplates,a calendar for 1913 with his initials and an etching of Dell Quay with his name dated 1911 Edward H.Pay was a pre War draftsman and artist who enlisted in The Royal Engineers c1916 . After basic training in North Wales he was posted to 75th Field Coy RE (Under the Command of Major R.Briggs DSO.MC) Which formed part of The Guards Division. 75th were tasked with Bridge building, Wire laying, trench making and constructing water supply for the Division. The letters all mostly sent to his Wife Jennie at Honor Oak Park SE23. Most are long readable letters mindful of the official censor Wed Sept 26 1917, Got back to my company last Thursday afternoon and found the Sgt Major away on leave also the Sergeant in charge of HQ Section and the pay Cpl in the office had stopped work because he said he should have been away on leave and only my going to the Colonels office has upset his lordship. Will the Cpl went on leave on Monday night and left me a nice legacy of back work!! The Major has twigged so I think the Cpl will have a warm reception when he returns! July 21st Many thanks for The Strand Magazine and Punch!! We have Two RAMC men attached to us for water duties they attend to the water cart which supplies us with Water and goes to special places The Water is brought to us in Petrol cans. During the period of the writing of these letters Guards Division were taking part in The Cambrai Offensive, Arras as well as vital defence of The Scarpe Sector. ( Hedlam,History of The Guards Division in The Great War refers) All in Vg condition Certainly worth further research.
