Paperback. Condition: Good. This graceful and digestible volume was called 'a little classic' by the New York Times Book Review. In it, one of the best known theologians, Tillich, explores the idea of faith in all its dimensions, defining the subject in the process. As Reinhold Niebuhr wrote in the New York Times Book Review, 'Paul Tillich is a giant among us.' 'A little classic . . . His analyses of the purely intellectual, emotional and volitional interpretations of the dynamics of faith are superbly subtle in distinguishing what is true from what is false in each position . . . Again reveals the astounding virtuosity of the man and the thinker.' ---Reinhold Niebuhr 'Tillich remains one of the very few of the very great theologians of our time. Dynamics of Faith is a good introduction for those who would like to get acquainted with him, an important clarification of his thought for those who have struggled through his earlier books and an important essay in its own right.' ---Albert C. Outler.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. 'The Irrelevance and Relevance of the Christian Message' is a transcript of Paul Tillich's 1963 Earl Lectures at the Graduate Theological Union. Delivered just two years before his death, these lectures present Tillich's heartfelt and deeply personal understanding of the relevance of Christian preaching and Christian theology. Why, Tillich asks, has the Christian message become seemingly irrelevant to contemporary society? Is the gospel able to give answers to the questions raised by the existentialist analysis of the human predicament? Yes, he answers -- but in order to do so Christian teaching and preaching need to undergo dramatic renewal, the root of which requires an affirmation of love as central to Christian identity. Further, we need to recognize that this task is not limited to preachers and theologians; all of us together are responsible for the irrelevance or the relevance of the gospel in our time. Much of the vast sweep of Tillich is spontaneously summed up here, as only he could have done it, speaking from sparse notes, personably and candidly, to both poles of his life's calling as theologian of culture and interpreter of the Christian message. We have in these lectures, as nowhere else with such brevity, the fully rounded out Tillich. -- from the Introduction by A. Durwood Foster Paul Tillich (1886-1965), an early critic of Hitler, was barred from teaching in Germany in 1933. He emigrated to the United States, holding teaching positions at Union Theological Seminary, New York (1933-1955); Harvard Divinity School (1955-1962); and the University of Chicago Divinity School (1962-1965). A. Durwood Foster is Emeritus Professor of Christian Theology at the Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, California.…

Paperback. Condition: Fair. Selected as one of the Books of the Century by the New York Public Library The brilliance, the wealth of illustration, and the aptness of personal application . . . make the reading of these chapters an exciting experience.--W. Norman Pittenger, New York Times Book Review The Courage to Be changed my life. It also profoundly impacted the lives of many others from my generation. Now Harvey Cox's fresh introduction helps to open up this powerful reading experience to the current generation.--Robert N. Bellah, University of California, Berkeley Originally published more than fifty years ago, The Courage to Be has become a classic of twentieth-century religious and philosophical thought. The great Christian existentialist thinker Paul Tillich describes the dilemma of modern humankind and points a way to the conquest of the problem of anxiety. Paperback. Condition: Good. This book presents Paul Tillich at his very best--brief, clear, stimulating, provocative. Speaking with understanding and force, he makes a basic analysis of love, power, and justice, all concepts fundamental in the mutual relations of people, of social groups, and of humankind to God. His concern is to penetrate to the essential, or ontological foundation of the meaning of each of these words and thus save them from the vague talk, idealism, cynicism, and sentimentality with which they are usually treated. The basic unity of love, power, and justice is affirmed and described in terms that are fresh and compelling.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Paul Tillich's classic work confronts the age-old question of how the moral is related to the religious. In particular, Tillich addresses the conflict between reason-determined ethics and faith-determined ethics and shows that neither is dependent on the other but that each alone is inadequate. Instead, Tillich reveals to us the gift that came.…
