Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Judy Le Paul with the collaboration of Charles-Guy Le Paul; Gauguin and the Impressionists at Pont-Aven; Abbeville Press, New York, 1987. First American edition. Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin (1848 1903) was a French Post-Impressionist artist. Unappreciated until after his death, Gauguin is now recognized for his experimental use of color and Synthetist style that were distinct from Impressionism. Toward the end of his life, he spent ten years in French Polynesia. The paintings from this time depict people or landscapes from that region. His work was influential on the French avant-garde and many modern artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Gauguin was an important figure in the Symbolist movement as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramist, and writer. His expression of the inherent meaning of the subjects in his paintings, under the influence of the cloisonnist style, paved the way for Primitivism and the return to the pastoral. He was also an influential proponent of wood engraving and woodcuts as art forms. From the blurb Shortly after his arrival in Pont-Aven in 1886, Gauguin had become the leader of a small band of artists who had been drawn to Brittany's picturesque countryside and to the Bretons themselves, who at that time still wore traditional dress and spoke Breton. The Pont-Aven painters experimented freely with the tenets of Impressionism, and their innovations provided a springboard to Post-Impressionism and the art revolutions of the next century. In this beautiful new book, Judy Le Paul, a leading authority on the area, has united over three hundred paintings, drawings, pastels, and prints with a lively text to give an evocative, anecdote-rich account of the Pont-Aven School. This very large format book, 283 pages measuring 320mm X 245mm, is in fine condition as is the dust jacket that is now in a protective mylar wrap. An important book on this masterful artist. This large and heavy book will require additional postage.
