This book is the story of 80 young American women who left rural Massachusetts in 1827 bound to their newlywed physician husbands for the Hawaiian Islands; he to care for the natives and she supposedly help Christianize the islands. Most found a life of raising children in the American Protestant tradition and running their homes with no time for conversions. This book sheds light on the role of the American Protestant mission in Hawaii and the indirect influences they had during their interactions with Hawaiian women and the effects their femininity and female behavior had on Hawaiian girls and women. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.

There is no damage to the cover and no marks inside the text. The dust jacket is faded at the spine, there are two small tears, one at the bottom of the spine and the other at the top of the front flap. Still, remarkably well preserved, the best copy I've seen. I've read lots of books about Hawaiian history and this gives a unique perspective on the Hawaiian mission. Photos available on request.
