Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Good. Second Edition. Memoirs of Rear-Admiral Sir W. Edward Parry, Kt. by The Rev. Edward Parry & A Memoir of Captain W. Thornton Bate, R.N. (Sammelband) 4th Edition (1858) & 2nd Edition (1859) bound together. Includes 2 portrait frontispieces and 4 engraved plates. Publication: London, Longman, Brown, Gree…n, Longmans, & Roberts, 1858 & 1859 Formatting: 12mo, two volumes bound as one, complete with two portrait frontispieces and 4 engraved plates. Condition Report: Good. This charming Victorian half-leather binding remains structurally sound, though the exterior exhibits noticeable shelf-wear. The spine, featuring five raised bands and gilt-lettered morocco labels, shows moderate scuffing and a visible area of surface loss to the leather in the second compartment, alongside light oxidation to the tooling. The marbled boards are heavily rubbed, resulting in some surface paper loss and exposed edges, and the corners are bumped. Internally, the book boasts handsome marbled endpapers and matching marbled page edges. The text block is generally tight and clean, though the preliminary pages (including the portrait frontispiece and title page) present with age-toning and moderate scattered foxing. The hinges remain secure, making this a durable copy despite its external wear. Catalogue Note: This volume is an attractive sammelband, a term for multiple distinct works bound together by an early owner, combining two popular mid-19th-century naval biographies. The first work is the fourth edition of Sir W. Edward Parryâs memoirs, and the second is the second edition of Captain W. Thornton Bate's memoir. Both works are illustrated, featuring striking engraved portrait frontispieces of the officers, supplemented by four additional engraved plates in the second work. The book bears pleasant contemporary provenance, featuring the armorial bookplate of "Alfred Eaton" on the front pastedown, decorated with a lion crest and the motto Toujours Pret (Always Ready). On the subsequent blank, a neat contemporary ink presentation inscription reads: "Alfred Eaton from his sisters Oct. 19th 1859," perfectly contextualising the original ownership, binding, and gifting of these newly published editions during the Victorian era. These two biographical works celebrate the lives and careers of two distinguished British naval officers, penned by men of the cloth who emphasize both the military heroism and the deep Christian piety of their subjects. Sir W. Edward Parry's memoir details his celebrated Arctic expeditions, highlighting his groundbreaking 1819 voyage through the Parry Channel in search of the Northwest Passage, and his later attempts to reach the North Pole. Bound alongside it is the memoir of Captain W. Thornton Bate, a highly regarded surveyor and officer whose dedicated service in China during the Second Opium War ended with his tragic death at the Battle of Canton. Together, these memoirs offer a fascinating dual-portrait of 19th-century British naval endeavor, duty, and faith. Unknown (Engraved plates) (illustrator).
