Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good dj. Illustrated by (dj) Bip Pares (illustrator). Reprint. [good sound copy, lightly shelfworn, spine slightly turned; the jacket is a bit edgeworn, with a number of tiny chips along the top and bottom edges, but still quite attractive]. Thriller about an attache of the American Embassy at Petrograd (described in the text as "a young New Yorkers of a particularly masculine type") who is charged, during the chaos of the Russian Revolution, with smuggling the titular jewels (which are, of course, "priceless") out of Russia and delivering them to the daughter of their owners, a Prince and Princess, in Florence. Before the end of Chapter Two, he's acquired a traveling companion -- a young woman who as about to meet a Fate Worse Than Death at the hands of some brutish Bolsheviks -- and the two of them set off on their perilous journey, across the Polish frontier and smack into the middle of war-torn Europe. (Oh yeah, did I mention there was also a World War going on?) Per the jacket blurb, "those days of terror -- those days in 1917 that shook Russia and the whole world as well -- live again with startling reality." And as the New York Times reviewer noted: "A brave hero, a beautiful heroine, and a flock of bloodthirsty villains -- what more could you want?".
