Decorative floral cloth boards, slightly more than half of the spine missing including the title. This is an ex-library copy, no external marks but with university bookplate inside the front board, tiny bl…ind stamp on title page, lending card pocket inside the rear board (never once checked out). All foldout plates are in nice condition, other than some fraying to one edge of the final three where they extended past the rear board, no harm to the engravings. The binding is tight, the contents quite clean. Original owner name at top of title page, dated 1836. A very early treatise on trains.

The second and much enlarged 2nd edition of de Pambour's technical examination of railways and locomotives - the first serious work on the physics of locomotives. Unlike the 1st edition, this one has more details on English locomotives etc. xlviii+583pp, plus the five fold out engraved… plates as required although these do have some wear and old tape repairs to verso. VG clean copy, slight wear to a few page edges but no foxing or spotting. Modern(ish) rebinding in half leather over marbled boards. A handsome copy.

A remarkable, early, study of railways, published during the first decade of engine-driven locomotives in the US.
