The catalogue for two exhibitions of work by Carleton Watkins (1829-1916), held at the Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco, May 17 - June 24 and June 28 - August 5, 1989. Between 1854 and 1891 Watkins roamed the west--from southern California to British Columbia and inland to Montana, Utah, and Arizona--documenting the landscapes and natural wonders, the people, their cities and settlements, and buildings and businesses that so dramatically transformed of the land. This monograph presents work made between 1861 and 1874 and includes images from his two Yosemite trips (1861 and 1865-66), plus photos of the Pacific Coast, Columbia River, Oregon, and Utah, and of mines. Eighteen of the works were newly discovered and appeared here for the first time. The reproductions are of exceptional quality. Photographs by Carleton E. Watkins; essay by Peter E.
