In AD 300 there was one major power in the Mediterranean - Rome -- beyond her frontiers was the barbarian world. The next four centuries were to see great changes take place in the period often referred to as the `Dark Age'. In AD 330 the centre of the Roman Empire was moved from Italy to a new capital in the east, renamed Constantinople, and by AD 476 Roman presence had faded from Western Europe. New kingdoms were founded from the Germanic north and in the Middle East the Sassanian Empire rose in Persia, only to be extinguished in AD 655 by the rising power of Islam. The balance of power had changed by AD 700 and three major powers now occupied the territory of the ancient Roman Empire: the late-Roman Empire of Byzantium; the Arab caliphate in the Middle East and North Africa; and Germanic Europe to the north and west. The wealth of this period can best be seen through the official coinage and from the finds of gold and silver plate, sometimes stupendous hoards such as that from Mildenhall, Suffolk, and Lambousa in Cyprus. These treasures are important not only for their beauty and high intrinsic value but also for the light that they can shed on the period in terms of art history and, perhaps more important, the circumstances surrounding their use and ultimate concealment. The most recently found of such hoards featured here is the early Christian plate from the Water Newton Treasure, found in February 1975. Brought together here for the first time are treasures of this period mainly from the British Museum collections but also from some of the major museums of the world to form a riveting display. Size: Sm 4to.
