Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Edward Pagram (illustrator). First edition thus. First published in France in 1836 as part of Balzac's vast sequence of novels and stories, "The Human Comedy", this is one of the four novels in the subsequence (that is a word, right?) "Scenes from Country Life". Described as one of Balzac's more romantic novels, it is here translated from the French by Lucienne Hill and has an Introduction by Martin Turnell. Slight bumping of lower corners, just a hint of browning to edges, but a very good copy indeed. Price-clipped dust jacket is very good, with shallow chips at extremities and a deeper chip to top of front panel. The attractive artwork on the jacket goes uncredited, except for the signature on the painting, but is by the British-born Australian artist/illustrator, and sometime writer, Edward Pagram. A collection of his dust jackets would be an interesting gathering, although a nice copy of the Grey Walls Press "Tender is the Night" might set you back a bit. MC.
