Grey boards, spine titled in pale green. Stains and use else good working copy. Lacks dust-wrapper. "Completed in January '52, [this book's] publication was postponed because it was then learned that another book which embraced the subject of shark hunting was about to come out. This was Mr. Maxwell's well illustrated 'Harpoon at a Venture'. Since Mr. Maxwell's tilt at the sharks took place in the same area as my own, since we both used the London Zoological records for some of the biological details we have pondered or enlarged on in our separate tales, and since my meeting with these great fish came about through one Harry Thomson who had once been with Mr. Maxwell, there were perhaps a few of the introductory aspects that we saw with similar eyes. But on comparing the two books now, almost a year later, I feel that our ventures sailed on somewhat different courses. So off to the printers it goes: as originally written, apart from a little tidying up - as it has lain in my publisher's office for many too many months." Chapters include: A few moments in February '51; Shark fever, 1950-1951; Preparation, March and April '51; The Minch and disaster, May; SHARK-O!; The Minch and competition, June; The hour glass; Sharks and ships and sealing wax, June; The final fling. .

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 2nd Edition. Shark - O! By P. FitzGerald O'connor. Hardcover, very good condition, minor marks, and shelf wear, dust jacket scuffed, chipped, and closed tears to edges. Publisher: Secker & Warburg, London, 1953, 2nd impression The author writes about fishing for Basking Sharks in the Atlantic. The only book on the subject I have seen so far. surprisingly the insight by the author of the biology and behavior of this shark was highly enlightened for the time the book was written (1950's). I was surprised that even then, fisherman were beginning to see that the oceans were being 'fished out', a truly relevant issue today. An interesting book for anyone interested in sharks and their history.
