Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Issued for Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1947 Broadway production, Allegro marked an important turning point in the development of the American musical. Directed under the supervision of Lawrence Langner and Theresa Helburn of the Theatre Guild, with choreography by Agnes de Mille, the production experimented with a largely continuous narrative and an ensemble "Greek chorus" long before such techniques became common in modern musical theatre. Although overshadowed commercially by Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, and The King and I, Allegro is now recognized by theatre historians as one of Rodgers and Hammerstein's most innovative and influential works. This edition features one of the shows best-known songs, "A Fellow Needs a Girl," along with attractive period cover art and a contemporary advertisement for Oklahoma! on the reverse. Condition: Very Good. Complete and structurally sound. Light overall age toning with moderate edge and corner wear, including small corner creases and light rubbing. Original owner's pencil inscription ("Nancy Whitman") appears neatly at the upper margin of the front cover. Small pencil arithmetic notation and ghosting of old tape or price label are present near the upper right and title area (with no residue remaining.) Interior music pages are clean and fully legible with no significant tears or missing portions. Rear cover remains clean with only light handling wear. The signed cover illustration is attributed to Ben R. Harris (Benjamin Jorj Harris, 1904-1957), the Georgia-born commercial artist who later worked closely with his wife, Georgette Harris, known professionally as "Jorj." The husband-and-wife team became particularly associated with sophisticated airbrush illustration and jointly published the instructional book Airbrush Illustration in 1947 under the name Ben Jorj Harris. Ben Harris was also related to Joel Chandler Harris, author of the Uncle Remus stories, and later supplied original decorative watercolors to Newman Decor for postwar interiors. This commercial illustration therefore represents an appealing early-career example of Harris' graphic work, considerably predating the airbrush work for which the Harrises later became known. The cover's credit line to Lawrence Langner and Theresa Helburn is notable. As leaders of the Theatre Guild, they were instrumental in elevating Broadway productions through artistic experimentation and high production values. Their partnership with Rodgers, Hammerstein, and Agnes de Mille on Allegro represents an important moment when commercial Broadway and serious theatrical innovation intersected, making this sheet music more than simply a song publication - it is a tangible artifact from one of Broadway's most ambitious postwar productions.
