In 1837 she became one of the wealthiest women in England when she inherited her grandfather's fortune of around £1.8 million following the death of her step-grandmother, Harriot Beauclerk, Duchess of St Albans. Burdett-Coutts spent the majority of her wealth on scholarships, endowments, and a wide range of philanthropic causes. One of her earliest philanthropic acts was to co-found with Dickens a home for young women who had "turned to a life of immorality", including theft and prostitution. The home was known as Urania Cottage." [Wiki] Osborne was the private Secretary of Lady Burdett-Coutts from 1887 - 1898. with her permission, he copied extracts of letters between Dickens and Burdett-Coutts, here, for the most part, presented to the public for the first time.
