Art / Print / Poster
Poster. A vintage poster of Ruth Orkin's "An American Girl in Italy" oddly titled "Firenze Piazza della Repubblica." Whether a joke or a statement of pride, that's where the famous photo was made: in the Piazza in Florence. The photograph is of a woman named Ninalee Craig who Orkin had met in 1951 at a hostel. Craig agreed to be photographed as part of a photo-essay Orkin wanted to do about women traveling alone in Europe. The photo ran in Cosmopolitan magazine in 1952 with tips on having a "gay trip and a safe one." The caption accompanying the photo in Cosmo read: "Public admiration.shouldn't fluster you. Ogling the ladies is a popular, harmless and flattering pastime you'll run into in many foreign countries. The gentlemen are usually louder and more demonstrative than American men, but they mean no harm." There is no credit information on the poster so it is likely an unauthorized Italian printing. Size: 27.5 x 20 inches, offset litho. Condition: Very Good+ with only a couple light dimples and a light bump at an edge and corners. Will be mailed rolled in a heavy card tube and shipped the next business day. Posters rolled in a tube need to ship via Priority Mail or Fed Ex; please choose expedited shipping at the time of purchase.
