Thirteen black and white plates, complete. Two additional pages of advertisements for other books in the back. Front and back pastedowns have advertisements for ot…her books printed on them. Excerpt from the Preface: "'Sea and Shore' is the sixth and last of the Onward and Upward Series, in which Phil Farringford, in company with his friend Larry Grimsby, has some experience as a traveller. The story includes the cruise of the Blanche, a first-class yacht, which goes to the Bermuda Islands, across the Atlantic, up the Baltic, and along the shores of the Mediterranean. The various 'tramps' of these young gentlemen are in the Bermudas, in Norway, Sweden, on the Rhine, and in other parts of Europe, though the volume is in no sense a book of travel." William Taylor Adams (1822-1897) was an American author and scholar who served on the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He often used the pen name, Oliver Optic, for his published works and wrote many books, mostly target toward young boys.

Adams was the author of more than one hundred books. He was criticised by Louisa May Alcott for his use of slang and depiction of 'low' characters such as bootblacks, elements which make him sound like a proto-Mark Twain, and should attract renewed attention today. Without date or place. On 4.5 x 9.5 cm slip of wove paper. In go…od condition, lightly aged, with traces of mount adhering to blank reverse. Evidently responding to a request for an autograph, Adams has written out his name and pseudonym in fine style, with flourish dividing signature from pseudonym: 'William T Adams / "Oliver Optic"'. See image.
