He used that ear, wrinkled and bleached from pickling, to drum up support for a war -- ''Come back with Spanish gold!'' was the cry, and the effects were felt as far away as Georgia and Mississippi in the New World. Includes the Book of the Month Club insert, with a review by Clifton Fadiman.
