Cloth. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Very well illustrated, large 8vo, pp vii, 247, a very good new copy. [This is the only book ever written about the orchids of Sulawesi. More than one century has passed since J.J. Smith published Die Orchideen von Ambon, and in that time books have been writ…ten about orchids in Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, the Philippines, New Guinea - in fact, all the major territories and islands except Sulawesi. This is quite an astonishing omission, because Sulawesi lies right at the heart of the region. It is the cross-roads of S.E. Asia, in a botanic and zoological sense. It is the place where the plants (and animals) from three totally different regions meet, mingle and interact. Sulawesi is unique, and so are many of its orchids. Bulbophyllum, with approximately 1900 - 2000 species, is the largest orchid genus in the world. Although it can be found in tropical America and Africa, the majority of the species occur in S.E. Asia, and it is only here that the genus shows the full range of its diversity. Bulbophyllum of Sulawesi is a scientific revision of the 123 species and 4 subspecies of Bulbophyllum that are found in Sulawesi. It contains descriptions of all 127 taxa, and illustrates the majority of them with colour photographs, line drawings, or both. The book is organised into sections according to the latest developments in orchid taxonomy; 24 Bulbophyllum sections are represented in Sulawesi. Keys to the sections and species are provided. There is a chapter on the biogeography of Sulawesi (which helps explain why the island is so unique) and chapters dealing with the island's forests and orchid habitats. Unlike many orchid books which are dependent on recycling old material, Bulbophyllum of Sulawesi is the product of original research and fieldwork. This is how 60 of the species in this book (an astonishingly high 47% of the total) came to be discovered during the course of this investigation.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 584 pp., illustrations, bibliography, index. The South Pacific island of New Guinea (the 2nd largest island on Earth) is the last great frontier for orchid species. Although it contains more types of wild orchid than any other place on Earth, it has been largely ignored by botanists and even today, li…ttle is known about the majority of the New Guinea species. Professional orchid collectors, repeatedly raiding New Guinea over the last hundred years, have concentrated on plundering a handful of highly profitable species; these are now quire well-known. With the recent opening up of the New Guinea highland areas, most interest has been directed at the bewildering profusion of orchids found there, concentrating on a few of the mroe colourful miniature species. Few people have bothered with the majority of New Guinea plants, and the New Guinea lowland plants have been particularly neglected. In this, the first major book on New Guinea orchids since 1928, author Peter O'Byrne deals with species found growing below 1000 metres altitude in Papua New Guinea, a country which comprises the eastern half of New Guinea and over 1400 other islands. Some 950-1000 orchid species have already been recorded from the PNG lowlands; 269 species (from 55 genera) are fully described int his book. Each species is illustrated with line drawings and over 130 of them are also illustrated in colour. This book is for the orchid enthusiast as well as the professional botanist. It follows a standard taxonomic layout, thus making identification of plants easier. In addition to a botanical description, each species has a general description (in which specialist terms have been kept to a minimum) and notes on cultivation. THere are also comments on distribution and ecology, and reference has been made to the majority of known species not included in this book. This book does not attempt to be a comprehensive survey of lowland PNG orchids. This book is a start, not an end.
