First edition (as stated upon copyright page). FAMILY ASSOCIATION COPY TO ONE OF THE MEMBERS OF THE EDITORIAL STAFF - LIKELY MAJOR GENERAL FRANK NORRIS WITH A PATERNAL LETTER LAID-IN AND THREE-LINE PATERNAL INSCRIPTION ON PAGE III. xii, 561 pages. Hardcover: H 23.5cm x L 15.5cm. Glossy white dust jacket rubbed; slight bumping at edges; sunning to spine's title lettering; front flap's top corner is clipped. Brown boards; spine heel bumped. Laid-in at front endpapers is folded stationery sheet with two star rank flag vignette for a U.S. Army major general (but unfortunately without a printed name) with nine-line undated paternal inscription noting the book as being "written by a committee - my principal portions were the Preface, Problem Division, Command Analysis and Finale. Lots of Love Dad." Three-line ink inscription to daughter and signed "Love - Dad" on page iii. Interior leaves are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. The three members of the Editorial Staff were Lt. Colonel Eames L. Yates, Lt. General Orwin Talbott, and Major General Frank Norris; as only the latter individual had the corresponding rank to the stationery sheet's flag vignette, a General Norris attribution to the letter and inscription seems applicable although an online obituary only cites a daughter named Priscilla (in addition to sons Drury and David) and not the letter's inscribee "Reanul[?]" but that, of course, could be a family nickname. Book was acquired from an unrelated Woodbridge, Virginia estate with no further provenance known. With endpaper maps, Preface, Acknowledgements, b/w photographs, b/w map illustrations amongst text credited to Eames Yates, Afterward [sic], Bibliography, and Index.
