The second volume of this book opens at a time when Great Western locomotive practice and performance was indisputably pre-eminent. Design at Swindon had reached a degree of finality, and the achievements of the King class engines made it appear that little more could be done with the basic Churchward 4-6-0 design. This book traces the remarkable story of how Swindon came to be eclipsed by other design centres, and yet nearly 20 years later staged such a remarkable come back as to regain, if not pre-eminence yet certainly parity and with the same family of locomotives. I am also selling Part 1 on this site. Ref UU 1.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Used-Acceptable. 480 pp. Foreword by John F. Stover [Professor of History, Purdue University, Indiana], fully illustrated with more than 900 color and b/w photographs, maps, paintings, prints, charts, tables, drawings, including specially commissioned artwork and diagrams, extensive listing of facts and figures of the world railways 1825-1977, glossary, index. Hardbound. Fine in acceptable dust jacket. For the first time in one original and comprehensive volume, all the many and varied aspects of the world's railroads, past and present, have been brought together. Since steam locomotives first pulled trains over iron rails more than 200 years ago, the railroads have changed the whole fabric of society and industry more than almost any other innovation. The whole story from before the immortal Best Friend of Charleston to the 185 mph supertrains of the near future - is told in this magnificent book. The technical development of steam, diesel and electric locomotives and the way in which railroads operate are covered in detail with specially commissioned full-color diagrams to ensure ready understanding by the layman. The encyclopedia is a major reference work. The lives of the great pioneers - Matthias W. Baldwin, George Pullman, the Stephensons and many others - are described in the biographies. Comprehensive tables give information including route lengths, gauges, electrification and first lines, on the railroads of the world. Records for motive power, rolling stock and civil engineering, and a glossary of technical terms are among the other important features of this book. Railroads hold a great attraction for enthusiast and layman alike and chapters on preservation, films, architecture and the great trains of the past such as the Twentieth Century Limited show the full fascination of the subject. This book features - Technological and social aspects of railroads past and present; Over 900 illustrations in color and b/w, including specially commissioned artwork and diagrams showing the technical operation of steam, diesel and electric locomotives; The world's ten greatest trains; Biographies of the great men of railroad development; Railroads at war and in films; Railroad preservation today; World records for power, weight, speed, bridges, tunnels and disasters; detailed glossary of technical terms; Index with more than 3,000 entries for easy reference.
