Softcover / Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Paperback. To this day the name of Dr Crippen is universally recognised as one of the most infamous in the annals of crime. Crippen murdered his wife and dismembered her body, burying the remains in the cellar of his home and fleeing to Canada with his young mistress. His notoriety is second only to that of Jack the Ripper. It was the job of one man to catch both Crippen and Jack the Ripper - Walter Dew. Dew was a detective constable in the Whitechapel Criminal Investigation Department throughout the Ripper investigation and was the first officer at the scene of the horrific murder of Mary Kelly. His later translatlantic chase and eventual capture of the fugitive Dr Crippen and his mistress Ethel Le Neve, using the pioneering method of the wireless, enthralled the world and made Dew famous. Dew was also involved in investigations into fraudster and bigamist Conrad Harms and jewel thief 'Harry the Valet', and was asked to comment on the disappearance, in 1926, of crime writer Agatha Christie. Starting from original research and using much previously unpublished material, including Scotland Yard files, Dew's own reminiscences and contemporary newspaper accounts, the author has created a vivid and detailed story of policing in the Victorian and Ewardian eras. This book tells the full, extraordinary story of Dew's life, from his humble beginnings as a seed merchant's clerk to Chief Inspector at Scotland Yard in charge of the most celebrated murder investigation of the 20th century. An absorbing account of the life and work of one of the most intelligent and determined policemen in British criminal history. Profusely illus., Appendices, Notes, Bibliog. and Index. 271pp. p/back. Lightly browned pp. Vg. Recommended.

Softcover / Paperback. Condition: As New. First edition. Softcover. SIGNED. Intro' by Richard Whittington-Egan. In 1888 the unknown brought death and terror to the streets of Victorian London's East End. This is the story of Detective Inspector Edmund Reid who was head of the Whitechapel detective force. It was at this time that he assumed responsibility to lead his men in a relentless pursuit of Jack the Ripper; his pursuit of the Whitechapel murderer spanned the years 1888 to 1891. Reid retired from the police force in 1896 but, in the subsequent years, he often reminisced on his involvement in the hunt for the infamous serial killer; from the comfort of his armchair he carefully considered any new theory that came to light about the identity of Jack the Ripper. Softcover / Paperback. Condition: Fine. First edition. Softcover, 1st edn. SIGNED. In spite of its small size and rural character, Herfordshire has been the location for some of the most infamous fiendish murders in the history of England. Spanning 4 centuries, this book contains accounts of many of these crimes. Famous cases are re-examined with the help of previously unused archive material and several other major cases are included in a book for the first time. Among the stories are the murder of a reputed witch by an angry village mob and the tale of John Thurtell who shot the regency buck William Weare over gambling debts. His execution attracted a crowd of 15,000. Also featured are the accounts of the last man and woman to be executed in Hertfordshire, + Jack the Ripper's Hertfordshire. Supported by dozens of contemporary illustrations, 'Hertfordshire Murders' reveals that behind the county's scenic countryside and rural charm lurks a murky criminal heritage. Illus., Appendices, Bibliog. and Index. 168pp. 8vo. softcover. SIGNED BY BOTH AUTHORS plus loosely inserted handwritten letter from GLENN CHANDLER. (author of the 'Taggart' series and many other dramas)on his headed notepaper, to 'Jonathan' (Goodman) the crime historian. A unique item. signed by authors.

Hardcover / Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition. Hardback. SIGNED. Foreword by Richard Whittington-Egan. In 1910 Cora Crippen, an unsuccessful music-hall artiste known as Belle Elmore, was murdered by her husband Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen, an American quack doctor, at their London home. During a search of 39 Hilldrop Crescent, Scotland Yard found the remains of her body under the cellar floor. Crippen's attempt to escape across the Atlantic, with his young mistress Ethel Le Neve disguised as a boy, made headlines across the world, as did his subsequent Old Bailey trial and execution. It became the most famous British murder case of the 20th century and has retained its fascination to this day. The author provides a meticulously researched account of the 'North London Cellar Murder', compiled from official files, contemporary newspapers and the autobiographies of many people connected to the case. Recently discovered material (including several long-forgotten memoirs by Ethel Le Neve) contains significant new information that shatters modern myths about the murder and popular beliefs about the characters involved. Stories that have persisted since 1910 of Crippen's innocence are also examined in this new, accurate and detailed account of the remarkable story of Dr. Crippen. Profusely Illus., Notes, Bibliog. and Index. 224pp. 8vo. h/back. With tipped-in label SIGNED BY NICHOLAS CONNELL. With various newspaper cuttings to fpd, ffep/verso and bpd. V. lightly browned pp. o/w Nr. F. in F. protected dw. signed by author.
