Edition la plus complète de l'ouvrage du Père Niceron et première édition de l'optique du Père Mersenne. Ce bel ouvrage est illustré par un beau frontispice gravé par Daret dans le goût baroque, un portrait et 50 planches hors-texte dont une sur double page : des vues en perspective, des trompe-l'oeil, des anamorphoses. Niceron s'est principalement concentré sur les applications pratiques de la perspective, de la catoptrique et de la dioptrique, ainsi que sur les illusions d'optique alors traditionnellement associés à la magie naturelle. Ce volume contient la première référence publiée à la dérivation de la loi de la réfraction de Descartes. Sensible à la magie naturelle encore en vogue à son époque, Nicéron avait tendance à considérer l'optique comme l'art de l'illusion plutôt que comme la science de la lumière. This beautiful work is illustrated with a stunning frontispiece engraved by Daret in the Baroque style, a portrait, and 50 out-of-text plates, including one double-page, featuring perspective views, trompe-l'oeil, anamorphoses, and more. "Niceron's (1613-1646) major work, however, dealt with perspective and geometrical optics. His Perspective curieuse (1638) defines the range and nature of the problems he addressed. Although aware of the latest theoretical developements, Niceron concentrated primarily on the practical applications of perspective, catoptrics, and dioptics, and on the illusory effects of optics then traditionally associated with natural magic.contains perhaps the first published reference to Descartes's derivation of the law of refraction (1638) and thus gains some historical significance. Needs complete restauration, but nevertheless a highly interesting copy, most probably a dedecation-copy to his mother-monastery in Paris (gold satmped dedication on frontcover), where he stayed before his relocation to Rome.
