Hartwell, Alonzo - Woodcuts (illustrator). 103 Pages.Crease to back cover that runs vertically from top to bottom Originally published in England in 1816 by John Harris. Copies came to America, and in the middle of the 1830s, it was issued by Munroe and Francis of Boston, in a redesigned, Americanized edition. The resulting book went through several printings without internal alteration. Among the legendary books of early American childhood is Marmaduke Multiply. Prepared as a fellow volume to Peter Piper, it teaches the multiplication table by means of catchy rhymes and engaging woodcuts. An early 19th century anticipation of Sesame Street, it remains one of the pleasantest and most engaging of early children's books. This reprint of Murmaduke Multiply reproduces the Munroe and Francis edition, the first American version of the rhymes. Designed and illustrated by Alonzo Hartwell it first appeared in the middle 1830's. Through succeeding editions, up until the 1870's, it was a favorite means of affording combined instruction and entertainmemt to young America. Today Marmaduke Multiply can still be used for its original amusememt and instruction purposes, but, with its quaint woodcuts and loaded rhymes, it has the added value of showing the mind of America in the days of the not so old-fashioned schoolhouse. This reprint of the 1841 edition is illustrated with 71 woodcuts.

New Mexico and particularly Santa Fe, have long been focal points of interest in American history. The Indians, the Spaniards, Kearny, Fremont, Garrard, Billy the Kid, Kit Carson, Sister of Charity Blandina, Bishop Lamy, Bill Williams, Bartlett, Emory, and hundreds of other early travelers and inhabitants, provided the warp and woof of an exceptionally rich tapestry. New Mexico was admitted in the Union in 1912 and the 1920 census lists the total number of inhabitants at 360,350. The same year, the population of New York State was 10,385,227. The new museum flourished and was the anchor of one of the most prolific and exciting manifestations of art in America. This book of 1940 was the best proof of the usefulness of the venture. It was the brainchild of Dr. Edgar L. Hewett, then director of the Museum of New Mexico. It has been out of print for years and when we look at it now, we have somewhat the same feeling of loving interest that we might have for our graduation year book.
