Here in the centre of Europe, architects and planners were brought together from north and south with the result that elegant Italian Renaissance buildings, such as the Belvedere or Royal Summer-House, may be compared with the impressive vastness of the Gothic Vladislav Hall - so huge that indoor tournaments were held there. But there is more to this city than buildings: there are treasures contained in themwhich every visitor should see. The Cathedral, which is itself richly furnished with Baroque and Gothic statuary, carvings and mosaics, houses the fabulous collection of Bohemian Coronation Jewels : the Strahov Library contains remarkable carved bookshelves and cupboards, and a ceiling decorated with a magnificent 18th century Viennese fresco; the National Museum, overlooking the always bustling Wenceslas Square, includes, among its various collections, a unique manuscript room; there is a wealth of picture galleries, concert and exhibition halls, theatres, libraries and museums. Probably the city's two most famous landmarks are the early 15th century astronomical clock, still powered by its original mechanism, and the beautiful 14th century Charles Bridge, guarded at each end by impressive towers and spanning the meandering Vltava river which divides the Old and New Towns of the city.
